Cathay Pacific to Launch Direct Hong Kong-Riyadh Service

Cathay Pacific has announced the launch of direct passenger flights to Riyadh, the bustling capital and financial center of Saudi Arabia.

The new service is now set to commence on 28 October 2024. It will operate from Cathay’s main hub in Hong Kong.

These new flights will significantly enhance connectivity, trade, and cultural exchange between Hong Kong and countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative.

The route announcement was celebrated with a formal signing ceremony in Hong Kong. Distinguished guests from both Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia witnessed the event.

Present were Secretary for Transport and Logistics Lam Sai-hung, and Consul General of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Hong Kong SAR Hamad Aljebreen.

Also in attendance were Cathay Group Chief Executive Officer Ronald Lam, and Saudi Air Connectivity Program Chief Executive Officer Majid Khan.

The official agreement was signed by Cathay Chief Customer and Commercial Officer Lavinia Lau and Saudi Air Connectivity Program Aviation Development Vice President Rashed Alshammari.

Firming a Two-Decade Partnership

Secretary for Transport and Logistics Lam Sai-hung hailed the agreement as a significant milestone. It solidifies the nearly two-decade-long aviation partnership between Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia.

He expressed his gratitude to Cathay Pacific for their unwavering support of the government’s policies and strategic development goals.

“This initiative aligns perfectly with the Hong Kong SAR Government’s commitment to strengthening aviation services,” said Secretary Lam.

“By expanding our network to Riyadh, we can enhance air connectivity between Hong Kong and the Middle East. This further solidifies our position as an international aviation hub.”

Consul General Aljebreen offered further comment. He highlighted the pivotal role these flights will play in fostering closer ties between the two regions.

“The inauguration of this route is a crucial step towards improved relations, stronger communication, and enhanced economic, tourism, and cultural ties,” he stated.

Consul General Aljebreen emphasized the timeliness of this development. It coincides with a period of flourishing cooperation and collaboration between Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong.

Connecting Hong Kong to a Vital Region

Cathay Pacific Group CEO Ronald Lam expressed the airline’s excitement about the new service. “These flights, launching in October, will significantly strengthen our Middle Eastern network. It will bolster Hong Kong’s connectivity with this vital region,” he declared.

Mr. Lam further emphasized the benefits for travelers, offering more convenient travel options and promoting opportunities for business, trade, and tourism.

He reiterated Cathay Pacific’s commitment to its Hong Kong roots and its role in connecting the city and mainland China with the world.

“We are firm supporters of the Central Government’s Belt and Road Initiative,” Mr. Lam said.

“Cathay Pacific currently serves 21 destinations across 14 participating countries, and we remain dedicated to developing new flight services along existing major routes and those connecting Hong Kong with Belt and Road countries and regions.”

Unlocking Saudi Arabia’s Tourism Potential

Saudi Air Connectivity Program CEO Majid Khan expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration. “Direct flights between Hong Kong and Riyadh with Cathay Pacific will significantly enhance air connectivity to Saudi Arabia,” he said.

“This will attract travelers from Hong Kong and Cathay Pacific’s extensive network, including China, Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia, and other APAC countries, allowing them to explore the vast tourism potential of Saudi Arabia.”

Cathay Pacific will operate three return flights weekly between Hong Kong and Riyadh, utilizing their modern Airbus A350-900 aircraft.

Passengers will enjoy a comfortable travel experience with a choice of Business, Premium Economy, and Economy cabins.
