Avelo Airlines had operated a service beyond the continental U.S. for the first time – inaugurating an exclusive nonstop service to San Juan, Puerto Rico from Greater Philly and New Haven, Conn.

These two new routes will connect the Island of Enchantment with two of America’s largest Puerto Rican communities.

Avelo to Puerto Rico

Avelo stands out as the sole airline offering nonstop service between Puerto Rico’s San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) and Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) and Wilmington Airport (ILG) in Greater Philadelphia.

By opting for Tweed-New Haven and Wilmington airports, Avelo provides a convenient and traveler-friendly alternative to the bustling Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), ensuring a smoother journey for passengers.

Boeing Next-Gen 737 Aircraft

Avelo operates these routes twice weekly, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, utilizing the Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft. This modern and efficient choice promises a comfortable and reliable travel experience.

For those seeking budget-friendly options, Avelo offers very low, one-way fares starting at $99 for flights between HVN and SJU. Such competitive pricing makes exploring the beauty of Puerto Rico more accessible to a broader audience.

Avelo Airlines Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy spoke on the landmark route service, stating, “Puerto Rico – Viaja con Avelo! Today marks another significant milestone in Avelo’s journey to introduce a new era of convenient, affordable, and reliable air travel.”

Levy emphasizes the strategic choice of Greater Philly and Southern Connecticut for these nonstop routes, given their substantial Puerto Rican populations.

Commendations from Key Figures

Puerto Rico Tourism Company Executive Director Carlos Mercado Santiago welcomes Avelo’s expansion, highlighting its positive impact on Puerto Rico’s air access hub and the local tourism industry. The new routes are expected to create jobs and boost economic activity.

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont praises the direct flight from New Haven to San Juan, emphasizing the benefits for the local Puerto Rican community.

Lamont sees this as an opportunity for residents to connect with their roots and for others to explore the island for the first time.

Connecticut is home to roughly 300,000 Puerto Ricans who represent almost half of the entire Hispanic population in the state (46.5%), one of the highest percentages in the nation.

Additionally, there are roughly 90,000 Puerto Ricans in the greater New Haven region.

Tweed-New Haven Airport is located on Connecticut’s coast and is a convenient gateway to all 15 towns that make up Greater New Haven.

Delaware Governor John Carney was positive about Avelo’s expansion, noting that flights to San Juan provide Delawareans with more affordable and convenient travel options. The increased accessibility also attracts visitors from neighboring states.

More than 250,000 Puerto Ricans live in the Greater Philadelphia /Delaware Valley region – the second-largest Puerto Rican population in the continental United States.

Wilmington Airport is conveniently located a short drive south of Philadelphia – offering a refreshingly fast, smooth and simple alternative hometown airport experience.

ILG’s adjacency to multiple major highways and railways makes it the most convenient and travel-friendly airport for Philly and the Delaware Valley, which encompasses portions of four states: Southeastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, South Jersey and the northern Eastern Shore of Maryland.
