Newcomer North American ultra-low-cost carrier, Avelo Airlines has seen remarkable success from its Los Angeles Burbank Base in the past couple of years. As of 1 September 2023, the airline celebrated transporting its one-millionth passenger from the Burbank California base.
Avelo Airlines has been based at Los Angeles Burbank (otherwise known as Hollywood Burbank Airport) since the airline’s foundation on the 8th of April 2021.
Avelo Airlines performance
The airline launched 11 unserved destinations from the airport, between April 28 and May 20, 2021, with an initial fleet of three Boeing 737-800s. As of today, Avelo serves 14 destinations from Burbank alone with a total fleet of 16 737-700/800 NG aircraft.
Since the airline’s foundation, the ULCC has proven itself to be a reliable and punctual option for passengers wanting to travel to the Los Angeles area and beyond.
In 2023, Avelo achieved the lowest flight cancellation rate (0.8%) and the second-best in terms of on-time performance (80.9%) in the U.S. Avelo has rooted itself as “L.A.’s most reliable airline.”
The carrier achieved a 0.68% cancellation rate and an 89.4% on-time performance rate for the more than 2,300 flights Avelo has operated from Burbank in 2023 alone.
In comparison in 2022, similar firmly established North American ULCCs such as Allegiant Air reported that only 66% of their flights arrived on time (Statista 2022).
Hollywood Burbank Airport
Avelo has seen a recipe for success derived from its impressive performance, paired with the high ratings of its base at Burbank Airport. BUR has been referred to as “Best U.S. Airport” by Fodor’s Travel in 2019.
The airport has been renowned for its ease of use with quick processing times and short walks within the terminal, making the airport a more convenient and stress-free option for travelers, especially compared to larger offerings such as LAX.

Avelo Airlines has transformed US the air travel industry by connecting 45 destinations across 23 states and Puerto Rico nonstop, with a special focus on underserved communities.
The ULCC prioritizes convenience, choice, and competition, offering affordable fares and the flexibility to modify or cancel itineraries without any additional fees.
The airline has had competitors worried with an expanding fleet and ever-increasing number of bases across the US.
In June 2023, Avelo announced a 6th base out of Las Vegas with the base opening as of next week.
Another success factor is that Avelo’s fleet of American-made Boeing 737 jets offers a more spacious and comfortable experience compared to smaller regional aircraft used by larger legacy carriers, typically used on similar city pairings.
Avelo previously announced two new bases in Q4 2022 located in Wilmington’s New Castle Airport, Delaware, and Raleigh – Durham Airport, North Carolina. We can expect further growth from the ULCC going into 2024 and beyond.
