Avelo Airlines announces Puerto Rico as first Caribbean destination

Avelo Airlines has announced its first destination outside of the continental United States. The airline will establish a nonstop service between Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) and Puerto Rico’s San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU).

Flight details and schedule


Starting from November 15, 2023, Avelo Airlines will operate the route twice weekly, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, utilizing their Boeing Next-Generation (NG) 737 aircraft.

This efficient and conevenient service will be the first and only nonstop flight option between Southern Connecticut and the enchanting Island of Puerto Rico.

Support for regional development


Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont is excited about Avelo Airlines’ continued growth at Tweed Airport and the addition of this new route to San Juan. Tweed Airport’s accessibility makes it a convenient travel option for many in the southern part of the state.

The announcement of this landmark new route was made during a Puerto Rico-themed ceremony at Tweed Airport.

The event was filled with Puerto Rican food, cultural performances by Movimiento Cultural Bomba Band, and a backdrop adorned with Puerto Rican flags and red, white & blue balloons.

Avelo leaders were joined by local and state political, community, and business officials, including Chief Financial Officer Hunter Keay, Governor Ned Lamont, and Senator Richard Blumenthal.
