In its recently released 2022 Sustainability Report, American Airlines showcases its commitment to sustainability and outlines the progress made in various areas over the past year.

As a leader in the airline industry, American Airlines recognized the importance of addressing key sustainability issues, including climate change, customer and team member safety, human capital, and customer service.

Fuel efficiency and emissions

American Airlines has set an ambitious goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. To reach this target, the airline focuses on running a more fuel-efficient operation and transitioning to low-carbon fuels.

In recent years, American Airlines has undertaken a substantial fleet renewal effort, making it the carrier with the youngest mainline fleet among U.S. network carriers.

The introduction of new-generation aircraft and the utilization of sustainable aviation fuel play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions.

The company has also invested in two firms dedicated to developing low-carbon, hydrogen-powered aviation, demonstrating its commitment to exploring innovative solutions for a greener future.

Recognized for climate action

American Airlines has achieved significant recognition for its climate action efforts. In 2022, it became the first airline worldwide to receive validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its intermediate 2035 GHG reduction targets.

This validation confirms that American Airlines’ targets align with the SBTi’s first aviation pathway, reinforcing the company’s commitment to science-based climate goals.

Furthermore, American Airlines’ Sustainability Report adheres to the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures, providing a comprehensive analysis of the risks and opportunities associated with climate change.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion

Embedding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles throughout its operations is a priority for American Airlines. The company recognizes that fostering a diverse workforce and inclusive culture not only aligns with its values but also strengthens its competitive advantage.

In the aviation industry, American Airlines strives to create opportunities for individuals from all backgrounds, including historically underrepresented groups.

The report highlights the company’s initiatives to increase awareness, accessibility, and opportunities for those interested in pursuing a career in aviation.

By nurturing diversity, American Airlines aims to become the preferred airline for its customers, reflecting the richness and diversity of the communities it serves.

Service and safety

The dedicated team at American Airlines plays a vital role in delivering exceptional service and ensuring customer and team member safety.

Even amid the challenges faced in 2022, the US airline remained steadfast in its commitment to reliability and world-class customer experiences.

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the American Airlines team, the company achieved its highest-ever customer satisfaction scores, as measured by Likelihood to Recommend.

American Airlines’ sustainability efforts have garnered significant recognition from industry peers. The airline was honored with the title of “2023 Air Transport World Eco-Airline of the Year,” a testament to its commitment to environmental stewardship.

Furthermore, the airline stands out as the only passenger airline to be included in the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index for two consecutive years (2021 and 2022).

These accolades demonstrate the airline’s industry leadership and commitment to sustainability practices.
