Last week it was announced that the U.S. carrier American Airlines has joined Embraer’s Energia Advisory Group.
This article will look into the details surrounding American Airlines joining Embraer’s Energia Advisory Group and what this means for sustainable, emission-free aviation.
American Airlines Joins Energia

On September 26, 2023, American Airlines signed a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with Brazilian aircraft manufacturer, Embraer, to join its Energia Advisory Board.
This new MoU will see American Airlines working alongside Embraer and a multitude of other companies, airlines, lessors, suppliers, and other aviation experts to enable the establishment of sustainable, emission-free commercial aviation.
The group will focus on defining the performance and design requirements for Embraer’s four Energia concept aircraft. These four Energia aircraft will seat anywhere between nine to 50 people and will be powered by a range of electric, hydrogen, and hybrid propulsion technologies.
American Airlines is one of the leaders in their drive for sustainable flying, with the U.S. carrier consuming more than two million gallons of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) during 2022 and was also awarded by Air Transport World, 2023 Eco-Airline of the Year.
Executive Comments
Commenting on their new MoU with Embraer, American’s Vice President of Sustainability, Jill Blickstein, has said, “We are delighted to work with Embraer to help develop Energia concept aircraft.”
“As the operator of the largest U.S. regional fleet, we believe industry collaborations aimed at advancing decarbonization technologies are critical to helping aviation reach its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. We look forward to working with Embraer and the other members of the Energia Advisory Group to develop next-generation, zero-emission aircraft.”
Adding to Blickstein’s comments, Arjan Meijer, President and Chief Executive Officer of Embraer Commercial Aviation, says, “It’s essential for Energia’s success that we involve a wide variety of air operators. American joining our advisory group, with their huge presence and expertise, is a significant step for the Energia project.”
“This group has developed into a core part of the program because of the breadth and depth of the expertise the different members bring to the table. We’re excited to work together with a world-leading airline on the biggest challenge our industry faces.”
