AirAsia Malaysia (AK) will mark a significant step in its expansion strategy, with the commencement of its inaugural Australian route to Perth. Commencing operations on 11 March 2024, this expansion further broadens AirAsia’s reach.
AirAsia guests will benefit from an increased frequency of flights, with the number rising from the current seven to 14 flights weekly to and from the capital of Western Australia.
This move provides passengers with more options and further cements the carrier’s position as Asia’s leading low-cost airline.
AirAsia Malaysia CEO Comments
Riad Asmat, the CEO of AirAsia Malaysia, expressed his enthusiasm, highlighting the significance of this strategic move. He stated, “We are thrilled to announce our very first route to Australia, operated by AirAsia Malaysia (AK).”
“This complements our existing daily medium-haul operations between Perth and Kuala Lumpur by our affiliate airline AirAsia X (AAX).”

New Aircraft Models
The introduction of new aircraft models, specifically the A321neo, equipped with extended range capabilities, plays a pivotal role in making these expanded services to Australia possible.
As Asmat explains, “With new specification aircraft models capable of flying beyond the usual four-hour radius, this enhanced range facilitates extended connections between destinations, opening up new possibilities.”
Perth: A Popular Destination
The Western Australian capital city of Perth has consistently ranked among AirAsia’s most popular destinations, attracting a diverse range of travelers for leisure, tourism, education, and family visits due to its proximity to Southeast Asia.
Data from January to October 2023 indicates that approximately 30,000 guests traveled from Malaysia to Perth, with Australians, Malaysians, Indians, Chinese, and New Zealanders comprising the top nationalities.
Recognizing the increasing demand, AirAsia views this as the opportune moment to expand its network into this flourishing market in Western Australia.
Future Expansion Plans
In light of the positive response and growing interest in the region, AirAsia anticipates introducing more routes in the near future.
The strategic move to include Perth in its network reflects AirAsia’s commitment to staying responsive to market demands and offering a diverse array of travel options.
To celebrate this latest milestone, AirAsia is extending a special offer of promotional fares from Kuala Lumpur to Perth starting at RM559 all-in one way.
This promotional fare, available for booking until 26 November 2023, is applicable for travel between now and 26 October 2024.
