AirAsia, South East Asia inaugurated the newly resumed flight from Hong Kong to Penang on the 10th of August with a grand opening. The new flight will be operated thrice weekly from the island of Penang.
This is a major milestone as this make AirAsia the only low-cost carrier offering a direct air connection between the two metropolitan cities.
At the welcoming ceremony, the flight was inaugurated and graced by individuals with high positions, such as the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture of Malaysia, YB Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan, the Caretaker Penang State EXCO for Tourism & Creative Economy,.
Also in attendance were YB Yeoh Soon Hin, Chief Executive Officer of Penang Global Tourism, Mr Ooi Chok Yan, and Non-Executive Director of Capital A, Dato’ Abdul Aziz Bakar.
This ceremony underlines the importance of the re-opening of the Penang to Hong Kong route, opening up endless opportunities.

Flight details
The flight departed from Hon Kong International Airport as AK2280 and arrived at Penang International Airport at 2:55 pm local time.
The flight carried an impressive passenger load of 96%, and guests were given a warm traditional Malay welcome upon landing.
Moreover, the aircraft was greeted with a water cannon salute, a long-standing tradition in aviation.
Hong Kong and Penang will become more connected than ever and will enhance the two cities’ trade and connectivity.

In light of the re-opening of the route, the low-cost carrier offered promotional fares between Hong Kong and Penang until the 13th of August at just RM279. The travel period for the promotions is between 21 August 2023 and 31 March 2024.
The low-cost carrier currently flies 7 direct international flights from Penang: including Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Surabaya, Jakarta, Medan, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
