Melbourne Airport has been named the Best Airport in Australia/Pacific region at the prestigious Skytrax awards, held this year in Amsterdam.

Thousands of people who work at the airport were also recognised, with the team awarded Best Airport staff in Australia/Pacific.

Known as the “Oscars of the airport industry”, the annually held Skytrax awards are based on passenger evaluations of infrastructure and service quality standards across more than 550 global airports.

Melbourne Airport CEO Lorie Argus said the awards recognised the significant investment the airport had made in terminal facilities, airfield infrastructure and staff training over the past 12 months.

“Customer service is at the heart of what we do, and we’re incredibly proud of the work our team puts in to give our passengers the best experience they can.

“Our ‘Stepping Forward’ program ensures all airport staff, whether they’re cleaners, plumbers, security or corporate are trained to help make the travel experience as easy as possible for our passengers.

“We’ve also listened to our travellers and heard what they’ve told us about where we need to improve.

“For example, we’ve invested more than $40 million upgrading our toilets and rest rooms, which have gone from being one of our biggest cause of complaints to one of our biggest sources of pride.”

“Our new toilets feature upgraded family rooms, all gender restrooms, Changing Places (adult change) and Assistance Animal Relief areas.”

“We’ve also removed two of our biggest passenger bottlenecks in Terminal 3 by linking it with Terminal 4, consolidating the security checkpoints and introducing the latest screening technology.

“Currently much of our focus is on Terminal 1, which we believe will be Australia’s best domestic terminal when upgrade works are completed later this year.

“Our aim is to be Australia’s favourite airport destination, and these awards suggest we are heading in the right direction.”

Melbourne airport as a key domestic and international hub

Melbourne Airport, in the state of Victoria, is the second-busiest airport in Australia and serves as a major hub for both domestic and international air travel. The airport plays a key role in the aviation sector, not only as a primary international gateway but also for domestic connectivity.

Domestic Connections

Melbourne Airport serves as a key domestic hub for Qantas, Virgin Australia, and Jetstar, which connect Melbourne with other major cities across Australia.

Australia is approximately the same size as the contiguous United States, but its key population centres are spread across relatively broad distances, particularly East to West.

Air travel becomes critical, and the Melbourne hub makes it easier for travelers to connect to their final destinations across the country.

International Connections

Melbourne Airport is also a major international hub, connecting travelers to destinations across Asia, Europe, North America, and the Pacific.

Major airlines such as Emirates, Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, and United Airlines operate flights to and from Melbourne Airport, making it easier for Australians to travel abroad and for international visitors to reach Australia.

Economic Importance

Melbourne Airport plays a critical role in Australia’s economy, generating thousands of jobs and contributing billions of dollars to the country’s GDP.

The airport is a major employer in the region and supports a wide range of businesses, from airlines and ground handling companies to hotels, restaurants, and retail outlets.

Melbourne Airport was previously named Best Airport in Australia/Pacific at the Skytrax awards in 2021 and 2020.
