A Malaysia Airlines flight bound for Kuala Lumpur was forced to make a return to Hyderabad, India following an engine failure after takeoff on 20 June 2024.
Malaysia Airlines flight MH199, operated by a Boeing 737-800, and made a departure from RWY 27L Hyderabad Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD).

A statement was issued by the airline following the incident. It confirmed that flight crew had detected an issue with one engine during the climb after take-off.
Video footage of the event captured by a passenger on board shows a trail of sparks emanating from the aircraft’s right-hand engine.
Flight crew subsequently terminated the climb procedure at 7000 feet and initiated a precautionary return to Hyderabad.
The aircraft entered a holding pattern to the north-east of the airport before conducting an approach and landing. The aircraft landed at the origin airport without further incident.

Flight Details
Flight data shows that flight MH199, bound for Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL), made an on-time departure out of Hyderabad at 00:30 local time.
The climb procedure was then terminated at 7000 feet as the aircraft crossed the Indian coast outbound.
Flight crew did not declare a formal emergency and the subsequent return procedure was conducted under normal flight operations.

This is a 10.1 year old CFM engine equipped narrowbody aircraft belonging to the national carrier Malaysia Airlines.
It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery in June 2014.
