A Sun Country Airlines flight operating from Seattle to Minneapolis made a precautionary diversion to Spokane, WA after an engine failure on 14 June 2024.

Sun Country Airlines flight SY286, a Boeing 737-800 operating from Seattle Tacoma International Airport (SEA) made the diversion was transiting Montana airspace.

A Sun Country Airlines flight operating from Seattle to Minneapolis made a precautionary diversion to Spokane, WA after an engine failure on 14 June 2024.

Flight crew left hand engine failure whilst in the cruise en route to Minneapolis St Paul International Airport (MSP).

The turnaround and diversion to Spokane International Airport (GEG), Washington was then negotiated.

The aircraft subsequently landed without further incident at Spokane approximately 30 minutes after the diversion was made.

Flight Details

Flight data shows that flight SY286 made an on-time departure out of Seattle (SEA) at 1809 local time on 14 June.

The flight then set course for Minneapolis, climbing to flight level FL370 (37,000 feet) for the easterly service.

Flight crew then initiated the turnaround and diversion from the cruise as the aircraft transited Montana airspace outbound.

The flight did not declare a formal emergency and the unscheduled diversion to Spokane was conducted under normal flight operating procedures.

The aircraft conducting the SY286 regional service was a Boeing 737-800, registered N856SY.

This is a 10.3-year-old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the US carrier Sun Country Airlines. It has been in operational service with the airline since March 2024.

Prior to its service with some country, the airframe was in operation with Turkish airline Pegasus since its initial delivery in March 2014.

Sun Country Airlines is an ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

It is the second-largest airline operating at the Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) after Delta Air Lines.

Sun Country operates to over 140 destinations in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. The airline also has significant charter operations and is a contract cargo operator for Amazon Air.
