EGYPTAIR Flight Alexandria-Jeddah Declares Emergency

An EGYPTAIR flight bound for Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from Alexandria, Egypt declared an emergency shortly after takeoff on Friday, April 12.

EGYPTAIR flight MS4413, a Boeing 737-800, was operating the regional service Borg El Arab International Airport (HBE).

The scheduled flight for Jeddah King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) declared an emergency with transponder code 7700 shortly after making its departure.

Flight data shows that flight MS4413 made an on-time departure out of Alexandria at 0137 local time on 12 April.

Return to HBE

Having made a right turn to take to establish track, flight crew subsequently terminated the climb at flight level FL150 (15,000 feet).

The descent was initiated immediately thereafter, and transponder code 7700 was transmitted with the aircraft descending through 10,000 feet.

The flight remained in the Alexandria area, executing a holding procedure to the east of the airport. During this time, further descent was initiated below 10,000 feet.

The aircraft was then committed to an early return to Alexandria airport. The nature of the problem prompting the return is not yet known.

Boeing 737-800 SU-GCM

The aircraft conducting the MS4413 rotation to Jeddah was a Boeing 737-800, registered SU-GCM. This is a 17.6-year-old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier EGYPTAIR.

The aircraft has been in service with the Egyptian airline since its delivery in September 2006.
