Ryanair has this week revealed that it will enter into the Salerno-Amalfi Coast Airport market with 16 weekly flights.
This will be the 32nd airport in Italy that the Irish low-cost carrier will be providing air routes into.
Italy has been a big focus point for the airline recently as we will explore in this article.
The New Salerno-Amalfi Coast Flights with Ryanair…
Ryanair will launch up to 16 weekly flights from Salerno in the Amalfi Coast and will operate to the following destinations:
- London Stansted
- Milan Bergamo
- Turin
It is understood this will turn over around 130,000 passengers total per year, supporting over 100 new jobs.
Roberto Barbieri, CEO of GESAC said the following on the new flights by the airline:
“The popularity and appreciation of the Irish airline, both in Italy and abroad, represent a significant added value to increase traffic volumes in Salerno and support the development of tourism and the local economy.”
“Thanks to Ryanair, the Salerno-Costa d’Amalfi airport consolidates its flight offering both on the national segment, with Bergamo and Turin all year round, and on the international segment, with the strengthening of connections with London.”
“This partnership is the result of intense team work aimed at satisfying the mobility needs of citizens and the many tourists who wish to visit our region which can finally count on a second airport, with a stable flight offer and destined to grow”.
“After the extension of the runway, which allowed GESAC to close agreements with the three main low cost airlines on the national market, the work continues with the second phase of the Development Plan which envisages, among other investments, the further extension of the runway up to 2,200 meters and the construction, in 2026, of the new Passenger Terminal, of approximately 16 thousand square meters, which will reflect the highest environmental standards.”
McGuinness: Continuing to Call For The Abolishment of Taxes…
Also commenting on the new flights was Ryanair Chief Commercial Officer Jason McGuinness.
Whilst celebrating the new flights from Salerno, he called for nearby Naples to scrap some municipality taxes.
“As the #1 airline in Europe and Italy, Ryanair is delighted to announce that we are bringing Europe’s lowest fares to Salerno with the launch of over 16 weekly flights on 3 popular new routes including London Stansted, Milan Bergamo and Turin from August 2024.”
“Ryanair’s new routes to/from Salerno will lead to significant growth in traffic and tourism”.
“[This will increase] options for citizens of Campania to travel for work, medical appointments or to visit friends and family.”
“We have worked closely with GESAC management to bring Ryanair’s low fares and greater connectivity to Salerno.”
“To confirm our commitment to Salerno and the entire Campania region, we are pleased to confirm that the two national routes – Milan Bergamo and Turin – will continue into the 2024/25 winter season, offering more year-round connectivity, tourism and jobs for Salerno and the entire Campania region.”
Another Shout towards Naples…
“This incredible growth in Salerno is in stark contrast to the situation in Naples”.
“We have been forced to reduce connectivity due to the unjustifiable 30% increase in the municipal surtax/tourism tax.”
“We ask Mayor Manfredi again to urgently abolish this unjustifiable increase”.
“[This] was done in Venice, to preserve connectivity, tourism and jobs in view of the winter season.”
“Ryanair also invites the Italian Government and other Municipalities to follow the example of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region and completely abolish the additional municipal surcharge/tourism tax at all Italian airports, allowing Ryanair and other airlines to further increase their traffic, tourism and employment for Italy.”
“If the Italian Government abolishes the regressive additional municipal/tourism tax, Ryanair will respond with a $4 billion investment in Italy, adding 40 new aircraft, an additional 20 million passengers per year, over 250 new routes and 1,500 new seats”.
Overall…
In conclusion, this represents more good news for Salerno in the Amalfi Coast.
For Ryanair, this is yet another market for them to capitalise well in, connecting Italy further.
All eyes will be on how the flights will perform for the Irish low-cost carrier.
If they perform well, then there could be scope to add more flights there to other destinations.
With their wide-ranging European network, the possibilities are endless for the local community.
