Wizz Air has secured the EMEA Environmental Sustainability Airline Group award for 2024. The award was announced this week at the prestigious CAPA Airline Leader Summit & Sustainability Awards in Hong Kong.
This achievement marks Wizz Air’s third consecutive year of recognition for sustainability excellence.
CAPA Environmental Sustainability Awards
The CAPA Environmental Sustainability Awards for Excellence acknowledge airlines, airports, and suppliers who prioritize climate action within their operations.
Independent research conducted by CAPA analysts and Envest Global’s carbon reduction strategists underpins these awards.
This research is based on the CAPA Envest Global Airline Sustainability Benchmarking Report. This is a comprehensive industry resource that offers a transparent assessment of airline emissions. From this, it establishes a reliable airline sustainability rating system.
Wizz Air Initiatives
Wizz Air consistently demonstrates leadership in minimizing CO2 intensity within the aviation sector, achieving industry-best results. This success is driven by a young and efficient fleet of 224 aircraft. The present fleet is over 60% comprised of ultra-efficient Airbus A321neo airplanes.
These advanced models boast a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and a 50% decrease in noise emissions per flight. These advancements directly support Wizz Air’s ambitious target of achieving a 25% reduction in carbon intensity by 2030.
Fleet Renewal and Sustainability
In addition to fleet upgrades, Wizz Air demonstrates commitment to a sustainable future. It aims to power 10% of its flights with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2030.
Wizz Air supports its ambition by investing in SAF production companies and establishing strategic offtake agreements with key partners.
Even ahead of EU SAF mandates, the airline group recently launched two SAF routes. These were Budapest to Barcelona, and Budapest to Brussels Charleroi. These initial routes are accompanied by a passenger survey to gauge awareness of sustainable aviation practices.
Wizz Air CEO Comments

“Contributing to this achievement is our young fleet with an average age of 4.43 years, where over 60% of our aircraft boast fuel-efficient neo engines.”
Váradi continues, “Reaching net zero emissions requires industry-wide collaboration and strategic investments in low-carbon technologies.”
“Governments and policymakers also play a crucial role by enacting necessary legislation and providing meaningful incentives.”
