Major low-cost carrier Wizz Air is launching its most ambitious winter schedule yet for 2024-2025. The winter season will see the airline introducing and reinstating over 40 routes across its extensive network.
The Hungary-based airline, which has grown to become one of Europe’s largest budget carriers since its founding in 2003, will begin serving Italy’s new Salerno airport.
It will resume operations from its Chisinau base in Moldova, and increase flights to popular destinations like Sphinx (Cairo) and Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt, Marrakesh in Morocco, and Stuttgart in Germany.
This expansion brings Wizz Air’s total winter route network to more than 600 destinations.
Record 28 Million Seats Across Winter
Passengers will have access to over 28 million affordable seats this winter season – the largest winter capacity in the airline’s history.
The network spans across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia, reflecting Wizz Air’s strategy of connecting underserved markets with major destinations while maintaining competitive fares.
Summer 2024 Performance
The airline’s summer 2024 performance demonstrated remarkable growth, serving nearly 40 million passengers.
Industry-wide operational challenges, including air traffic control restrictions and staff shortages across European airports, have continued to frustrate the sector.
Despite this, Wizz Air completed 99.3% of its almost 200,000 scheduled flights, ranking among the industry’s best reliability rates. This achievement underscores the carrier’s operational resilience and commitment to passenger service.
Recent service improvements include enhanced membership options such as:
- All You Can Fly pass for unlimited travel
- Extended WIZZ MultiPass availability in more markets
- Premium tier for Wizz Discount Club with additional benefits
- Flexible booking options with WIZZ Flex
The airline has also modernized its payment systems, now accepting Apple Pay and Google Pay in its mobile app, plus Revolut cards for in-flight purchases.
These digital payment solutions complement Wizz Air’s existing mobile-first strategy, which includes a user-friendly booking app and digital boarding passes.
Environmental Initiatives
Maintaining its environmental leadership, Wizz Air achieved the industry’s lowest carbon emissions at 52.6 grams of CO2 per passenger/kilometer over the past year.
This impressive figure is attributed to the airline’s young fleet, with an average aircraft age of just 4.6 years. The airline is currently testing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) with Airbus, preparing for the upcoming RefuelEU regulations in January 2025. This upcoming mandate will require airlines to increase their use of sustainable fuels.
