Wizz Air Flight W43176 Barcelona-Bucharest Declares Emergency

Wizz Air flight W43176, an A321-200 from Barcelona, declared an emergency and descended to 10,000 feet while inbound to Bucharest on 4 February.

A Wizz Air flight operating from Barcelona to Bucharest declared an emergency whilst en route on Tuesday, 4 February 2025.

Wizz Air flight W43176, operated by an Airbus A321-200, was transiting Bulgarian airspace en route to Bucharest when the emergency was declared.

Flight crew declared the emergency with transponder code 7700 at 1034 UTC, as the aircraft descended from cruising altitude en route to Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP).

The flight then continued to the scheduled destination at the reduced altitude of approximately 10,000 feet.

The nature of the problem prompting flight crew to declare an emergency is not yet known. The descent from cruising altitude to 10,000 feet may suggest a pressurisation problem, though this has not yet been confirmed.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that flight W43176 had made an on-time departure from Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN) at 0852 local time.

The flight and then set because normally, climbing to flight level FL360 (36,000 feet) for the westerly service to Bucharest.

The flight was in the cruise at FL360 when a descent was conducted in a descending turn over Bulgarian airspace en route. Flight crew then squawked transponder code 7700 as the aircraft passed through 12,000 feet on descent.

The flight then continued on flight plan track to the destination airport at the reduced altitude. Flight crew returned to a normal squawk code as the flight approached the destination at 10,000 feet.

The aircraft conducting the W43176 rotation from Barcelona El Prat airport was an Airbus A321-200, registered HA-LTK. This is a 6.2 year old narrow body aircraft belonging to the carrier Wizz Air.

It has been operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in December 2018.

A Wizz Air spokesperson has provided clarification on the flight W43176 emergency, confirming the safe landing of the flight after observance of safety protocols.

“Wizz Air confirms that its flight W43176 from Barcelona to Bucharest on 4 February received an early indication of a possible fault while approaching the airport. Following the established protocols the crew lowered to safe altitude. They released the oxygen masks and requested a priority landing at Bucharest Henri Coanda Airport. The aircraft landed uneventfully, and is being inspected by the technical team. The safety of its passengers, crew and aircraft remains the airline’s top priority.”
