Wizz Air, the Hungarian low-cost carrier, has secured a crucial compensation deal with engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney. The recently brokered agreement now paves the way for a return to growth in 2026.
The arrangement will see Pratt & Whitney provide a compensation package to Wizz Air to offset costs associated with grounded fleet aircraft.
The RTX Corp. owned engine manufacturer will also provide operational support to the airline through to the close of 2026.
This agreement follows a period of significant disruption caused by the grounding of a substantial portion of the airline’s fleet due to engine inspection requirements.
GTF Engine Issues
The engine in question is the Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan (GTF) PW1100G-JM model. It powers a significant number of Airbus A320neo aircraft, including those operated by Wizz Air. However, concerns emerged regarding potential cracks in the engine’s fan blades.
This necessitated extensive inspections and, in many cases, engine replacements. The technical issue led to the grounding of approximately 40 Wizz Air aircraft, significantly impacting flight schedules and financial performance.
The grounding had a severe impact on Wizz Air’s profitability, with first-quarter net profits plummeting by 98% to a mere €1.2 million. The airline incurred substantial costs due to the need to lease replacement aircraft to maintain operations during the peak summer season.
Wizz Air Optimistic on Future Prospects
‘The company is projecting a continued grounding of around 40 Airbus 40 Airbus A320neofamily aircraft through FY26 due to inspections required on its GTF fleet,’ Wizz Air stated.
Despite these challenges, Wizz Air remains optimistic about its long-term prospects. The airline has placed orders for 50 new Airbus A321neo aircraft, scheduled for delivery between 2025 and 2026.
This fleet expansion will enable the airline to increase its flight capacity by approximately 20%, positioning the airline for renewed growth in the coming years.
The compensation deal with Pratt & Whitney provides a degree of financial relief for Wizz Air, mitigating some of the losses incurred due to the engine issues. However, the full extent of the financial impact remains to be seen.
