Wizz Air, a prominent European ultra-low-cost carrier, has secured the “Most Sustainable Low-Cost Airline” title.
This becomes the fourth consecutive year that the airline has taken out the key sustainability accolade. The achievement was recognized at the World Finance Sustainability Awards 2024.
Lowest Industry Carbon Footprint
Wizz Air boasts the aviation industry’s lowest carbon footprint per passenger kilometer, compared to its competitors.
The airline remains dedicated to further reducing its CO2 emissions by 2030. Wizz Air hit a record low for average CO2 intensity in fiscal year 2024. It reached just 52 grams per passenger kilometer.
This accomplishment is directly linked to the company’s commitment to modernizing its fleet and using cutting-edge, fuel-efficient aircraft.
The airline consistently expands its Airbus A321neo fleet, contributing to an average fleet age of only 4.3 years.
Building on its existing successes, Wizz Air boldly announced a new goal in April 2024. It now aims to power 10% of its flights with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2030.
This ambitious target further solidifies Wizz Air’s position as a sustainability leader within the industry.
It further fuels its commitment to reducing carbon emissions per passenger kilometer by 25% by the year 2030.
Ultra-Low Cost Model and Sustainability
Yvonne Moynihan, Wizz Air’s Corporate and ESG Officer, offered comment on the recent accolade.
She highlighted the company’s pride in being recognized by World Finance for its unwavering sustainability efforts for the fourth consecutive year.
Ms. Moynihan also emphasized that the airline’s ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) business model inherently promotes sustainability.
In addition to fleet renewal and operational efficiency enhancements, Wizz Air heavily invests in sustainable aviation fuel, considered the most impactful solution for reducing aviation emissions in the near future.
Achieving net-zero emissions requires industry-wide collaboration. Wizz Air emphasizes the importance of uniting all aviation stakeholders to support and fund the necessary technological advancements.
Governments and policymakers have a crucial role to play by establishing frameworks that provide strong incentives for strategic investments in renewable energy and low-carbon technologies.
