Wizz Air A321neo Diverts to Stockholm Due to Smoke on Board

A Wizz Air Malta Airbus A321neo operating from Gdansk, Poland to Tromso, Norway diverted to Stockholm due to the presence of smoke on board on 16 November 2024.

Wizz Air Malta flight W61771, operated by an Airbus A321neo, was en route to Tromso Airport (TOS). The flight had originated from Gdansk Lech Walesa Airport (GDN).

With the aircraft en route in cruising flight, the operating crew reported the presence of smoke onboard.

Flight crew made the decision to divert to nearby Stockholm as a precaution. The flight subsequently landed without further incident at Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN). The landing on runway 26 Stockholm Arlanda took place just over 30 minutes after the diversion was made.

Flight data shows that flight W61771 departed from Gdansk Lech Walesa Airport at 1743 local time on 16 November.

The flight had then proceeded normally, climbing to flight level FL350 for the northerly service to Tromso. The aircraft was approximately 100nm to the south of Stockholm on flight plan track when the diversion was carried out.

The aircraft conducting the W61771 service to Norway was an Airbus A321neo, registered 9H-WNC. This is a 0.9 year old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier Wizz Air Malta.

It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in January 2024.

Wizz Air Malta is a low-cost airline based in Malta. It is a subsidiary of the Hungarian airline Wizz Air. The airline was founded in 2022 and operates a fleet of Airbus aircraft.
