WestJet Flight From Portland Suffers Rough Landing in Calgary

It has emerged that a WestJet Encore flight from Portland suffered a rough landing in Calgary earlier this month.

WestJet Encore flight WS3627, which suffered a rough landing, is a routine scheduled flight between Portland and Calgary.

Also, the particular aircraft involved in this incident is C-FWEW.

As per data from Planespotters.net, C-FWEW is a 7.6 year old Bombardier Dash 8-Q400 that originally started out life with Island Air in December 2016.

By March 2018, the aircraft was handed back to lessor Elix Aviation Capital, before heading to WestJet Encore in April of that same year.

Furthermore, of the Dash 8-Q400 variant, WS Encore has 47 of them in their fleet.

Of that 47, all but 17 are in active service, with an average fleet age of 8.8 years.

WestJet Encore flight WS3627 departed Portland at 1358 local time on June 4, 2024 and tracked towards Calgary.

As per The Aviation Herald, it is understood the WestJet Encore flight suffered a rough landing at +2.47G.

It is understood the aircraft was able to roll out to the gate without further incident thereafter.

Aircraft Taken Out of Service For Nearly Two Weeks…

Data from RadarBox shows that the aircraft completed another eight flights between June 4-6 before being taken out of service.

It is understood that the aircraft had to go through significant maintenance, as the Canadian TSB explains:

“During the landing on Runway 29 in CYYC, the aircraft touched down with a recorded vertical acceleration of 2.47 g with the longitudinal axis of the aircraft not aligned with the runway track.”

“Company maintenance completed a Phase 2 inspection on the aircraft, and subsequently replaced the right-hand main landing gear assembly due to the side load experienced during the landing.”

The WestJet Encore aircraft involved in the rough landing on WS3627 Portland-Calgary re-entered service on June 22.

Since then, it has operated flights to the following destinations:

  • Fort McMurray
  • Kelowna
  • Penticton
  • Edmonton
  • Victoria
  • Saskatoon

Following the maintenance action, no further incidents have been reported with the aircraft.
