Virgin Australia has announced a significant leadership transition, with Dave Emerson, the current Chief Commercial Officer, stepping into the role of Virgin Australia Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
This move follows Jayne Hrdlicka’s decision to retire as Virgin Australia CEO, marking the end of a transformative chapter and the beginning of a promising new phase for the airline.
The transition will be swift with Mr. Emerson immediately integrating into his new role, officially assuming leadership on Friday, March 14th.
Ms. Hrdlicka will remain on board for several months to provide support, ensuring a smooth handover. This carefully planned transition emphasizes continuity and stability, vital for maintaining the airline’s momentum.

Dave Emerson: Deep Industry Experience
The Board’s decision to appoint Mr. Emerson follows an extensive global search. It ultimately concluded that he was the ideal candidate to spearhead Virgin Australia’s ongoing strategic initiatives.
With 25 years of experience in the aviation and tourism sectors, he has worked alongside prominent global airlines. Mr. Emerson has cultivated a reputation for driving business transformation and achieving exceptional financial results.
In his current role as Chief Commercial Officer since June 2021, Mr. Emerson has been instrumental in positioning Virgin Australia as a value-driven airline that prioritizes its customers and employees.
Chairman Ryan Cotton Comments
Virgin Australia Chairman Ryan Cotton expressed unwavering confidence in Mr. Emerson’s ability to lead the airline forward. “After a global search, it was clear that Dave is the right leader to continue the implementation of Virgin Australia’s strategy,” he stated.
“Detailed plans are in place which will deliver continued growth, strong business performance, and continuity of strategy further enhancing Virgin Australia’s competitive position in the Australian market.”
Mr. Cotton also highlighted Mr. Emerson’s understanding of Virgin Australia’s unique culture, emphasizing his commitment to preserving and nurturing it.
“Dave also appreciates what is special about Virgin Australia – our team and our people – and will continue to act as a steward of our amazing culture,” he affirmed.

Furthermore, Mr. Cotton acknowledged Mr. Emerson’s deep understanding of the Australian aviation landscape, his commercial acumen, and his focus on customer experience.
“Having had the opportunity to work with Dave over the last four years we recognise his unique breadth of commercial, digital and customer experience plus his deep knowledge of Australian aviation.”
“He is well placed to support the strong momentum of the business. He will ensure the team continues to go from strength to strength,” he said.

The Board also took the opportunity to express its profound gratitude to Jayne Hrdlicka for her exceptional leadership. “On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Jayne for her exceptional leadership of the company,” Mr. Cotton stated.
He acknowledged her pivotal role in navigating the airline through challenging times. This included its period of administration and the complexities of restoring its network post-COVID.
Ms. Hrdlicka’s vision and dedication have been instrumental in rebuilding Virgin Australia, positioning it for future success. “Virgin Australia is in an excellent position for the future thanks to her leadership through some of the most difficult times in our industry,” Mr. Cotton emphasized.

Emerson’s Vision for the Future
Incoming Virgin Australia CEO Dave Emerson expressed his humility and excitement about leading Virgin Australia into its next chapter. “I’m humbled by the opportunity to lead the airline and it’s 8,000 strong team on its next exciting chapter,” he said.
He emphasized the importance of the airline’s employees, recognizing them as the heart of the organization. He characterised them as a key differentiator in the competitive Australian aviation market.
“We exist for our customers, but it is our people who are the heart of this organisation. They are central to our brand and our key differentiator in the highly competitive Australian aviation landscape,” he affirmed.
Mr. Emerson pledged to continue the transformation journey initiated under Ms. Hrdlicka’s leadership. The focus will remain on growth, innovation, and enhancing customer loyalty.
“I will continue the transformation journey begun under Jayne’s outstanding leadership,” he stated. He also highlighted the airline’s return to long-haul international flying and its commitment to innovating domestic services. It promises greater choice and value for customers.
