Virgin Australia Crewmembers Confined to Rooms After Incident in Fiji

Three Virgin Australia crewmember were confined to their hotel rooms during a police investigation in Fiji after they were allegedly targeted while on a night out.

On New Year’s Eve, three Virgin Australia flight attendants were allegedly assaulted and robbed in Fiji. The incident occurred after the crew landed at Nadi International Airport and spent time at local clubs in the Martintar region.

Fiji police have launched an investigation into the matter. Speaking to the Fiji Sun, Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew confirmed that police are examining reports of theft and rape or sexual assault allegations.

“We confirm police are investigating the Australian airline crew case. They were (alleged) victims of theft and of allegations of sexual assault after clubbing,” Acting Commissioner Chew stated.

The crew members involving have been cooperating with local authorities. They had been separated and confined to their hotel layover accommodation while the investigation continued.

It is understood from media reports that Fiji police are considering locals as suspects.

Virgin Australia Response


Virgin Australia is aware of the incident and is providing support to the affected crew members. The airline has not released any further details about the incident. It is believed that the crew members were targeted while they were out celebrating New Year’s Eve.

The airline despatched an investigation team to Fiji to conduct a separate investigation of he incident. A comment from the airline noted the welfare of the crew as a priority.

While assaults on flight crew are sadly a common occurrence during flights, this incident serves as a stark reminder that the dangers faced professional crews extend far beyond the confines of the aircraft. Layovers, intended as periods of rest and off-duty recuperation, can also present significant safety risks.

It is important to note that this incident is still under investigation, and the details of what happened are still unclear.
