Virgin Australia and Air New Zealand Resume Codeshare Alliance

Former partners Virgin Australia and Air New Zealand have restored their codeshare alliance, commencing 9 December 2024.

Virgin Australia and Air New Zealand have officially restored their highly anticipated codeshare partnership, promising a transformative travel experience for passengers crossing the Tasman Sea.

This strategic collaboration marks a significant milestone in trans-Tasman aviation. It offers superior connectivity and convenience for travelers between Australia and New Zealand.

Effective from 9 December 2024, passengers can now book Virgin Australia flights operated by Air New Zealand, with VA flight numbers extending to key New Zealand destinations including Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch.

This expansion builds upon Virgin Australia’s existing services to Queenstown, effectively broadening the network and travel options for customers.

A Win for Velocity Frequent Flyers


The partnership covers approximately 300 weekly services, providing travelers with an extensive range of travel possibilities. Velocity Frequent Flyer members stand to gain significant advantages through this new agreement, enjoying a comprehensive suite of benefits:

  • Comprehensive Velocity Points and Status Credits earning across the expanded network
  • Complimentary lounge access for Gold and Platinum tier members
  • Seamless travel experiences with integrated baggage handling and unified boarding passes
  • Enhanced priority services, including additional checked baggage allowances
  • Priority check-in and boarding privileges
  • Specialized options for corporate travelers and business professionals

Deeper Partnership Connection


Virgin Australia’s Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer, Alistair Hartley, emphasized the deeper significance of the partnership. “This codeshare agreement transcends traditional flight connections,” he explained.

“It celebrates the profound historical and cultural bonds between Australia and New Zealand, creating travel experiences that simplify exploration and connection.”

Hartley highlighted the strategic vision behind the collaboration, positioning it as more than a mere operational arrangement. “We’re committed to delivering unparalleled network coverage, loyalty rewards, and travel flexibility that make cross-border journeys effortless,” he added.

Air New Zealand’s General Manager for Australia, Kathryn O’Brien, shared similar enthusiasm. “We’re revolutionizing cross-border travel, making it simpler, more enjoyable, and more accessible,” she stated. “Whether travelers are seeking weekend getaways, business opportunities, or family reunions, this partnership opens up exciting new possibilities.”

O’Brien also promised an exceptional customer experience, emphasizing the airline’s renowned Kiwi hospitality. “We’re extending a warm Kia ora to Virgin Australia passengers, inviting them to experience the authentic spirit of Aotearoa from the moment they step onboard,” she said.
