After a decade-long absence, Virgin Atlantic has returned to Canada, launching a brand-new daily direct route between London Heathrow and Toronto Pearson International Airport.
This exciting development marks a significant expansion for the airline and offers travelers greater connectivity between the UK and Canada.
A Celebratory Return to Toronto
The inaugural flight was met with fanfare, as Virgin Group founder, Richard Branson, personally welcomed the crew and passengers. This celebratory moment underscored the airline’s commitment to the Toronto route and its dedication to providing exceptional service.
“I’m delighted to see Virgin Atlantic return to Toronto, a city with so much spirit and energy,” Branson stated. He went on to highlight the vibrant nature of the Canadian metropolis.
Connecting Cultures and Economies
This new service will facilitate the movement of over 165,000 passengers annually, utilizing the modern and efficient Boeing 787-9 aircraft.
The route caters to both business and leisure travelers, offering Virgin Atlantic’s renowned three cabin classes: Upper Class, Premium, and Economy. Each class promises world-class service, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable journey.

Expanding Horizons with WestJet
But the benefits extend beyond a simple direct flight. A strategic codeshare partnership with WestJet opens up a network of 13 additional Canadian destinations from Toronto.
Travelers can now conveniently reach cities like Calgary, Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Ottawa, broadening their travel options within Canada.
This partnership is further strengthened by the upcoming launch of a joint loyalty program, allowing Flying Club members to accrue and redeem rewards across both airlines.
A Strategic Move for Virgin Atlantic
The impact of this new route reaches far beyond Toronto. Virgin Atlantic’s extensive transatlantic network has benefits for Canadian travelers.
It allows them to connect through London Heathrow to key destinations in India, including Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru. Swift transit times average just 1 hour and 20 minutes.
Moreover, global travelers can access onward connections to destinations like Johannesburg, Lagos, Tel Aviv, and Beirut, enhancing international travel opportunities.

Juha Jarvinen, Chief Commercial Officer at Virgin Atlantic, emphasized the strategic importance of this return. “We’re absolutely thrilled to be back in Canada. We’ve long wanted to return – and this time, we’re here to stay,” Jarvinen said.
He highlighted Toronto’s status as a thriving financial hub and a gateway to Canada’s diverse landscapes and cultures.
The timing of this expansion, he explained, is perfect, given the airline’s strong transatlantic focus, expanded connectivity to India, and the new partnership with WestJet.
Looking Forward
The launch of this new route signifies a significant milestone for Virgin Atlantic. It comes at a time of geopolitical unrest with the United States.
Transatlantic travel to and from the United States is currently throwing up mixed signals. This week, Virgin Atlantic spoke of signs of reduced air travel demand from the United States.
By connecting Toronto to London and beyond, Virgin Atlantic is fostering stronger ties with Canada. It may signal a changing dynamic in the transatlantic air travel market.
