Joby Aviation, Inc. (NYSE:JOBY), a pioneering California-based company, has announced a new partnership with UK long-haul carrier Virgin Atlantic.

This new collaboration aims to launch Joby’s innovative air taxi service across the United Kingdom, promising to transform short-range travel.

The venture builds upon the existing alliance between Joby and Delta Air Lines, which holds a significant 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic.

By uniting these powerful brands, all committed to innovation and exceptional customer service, the partnership is poised to disrupt traditional transportation methods.

Urban Air Mobility in the UK

The core objective is to provide seamless, zero-emission journeys throughout the UK. Swift, electric flights would connect major cities and regional hubs, starting with routes from Virgin Atlantic’s primary hubs at Heathrow and Manchester Airports.

Virgin Atlantic will play a crucial role in supporting Joby’s market entry by promoting the service to its vast customer base. The airline would engage with regulatory bodies, and contribute to the development of essential landing infrastructure at key airports.

Joby’s electric air taxi, designed to carry a pilot and four passengers, boasts impressive capabilities. With a top speed of 200 mph, it promises to significantly reduce travel times. Virgin Atlantic customers will enjoy the convenience of booking their air taxi rides directly through the airline’s app, website, and other platforms.

The technology behind Joby’s air taxi is truly remarkable. Utilizing six tilting propellers, the aircraft achieves vertical takeoff and landing with minimal noise. This is a significant improvement over traditional helicopters.

Optimized for rapid, back-to-back flights, it is designed for routes up to 100 miles. Joby has already conducted thousands of successful test flights. This has included demonstrations in major cities like New York City, Tokyo, and Seoul.

Stakeholder Comments

Shai Weiss, CEO of Virgin Atlantic, emphasizes the partnership’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. “We are a leader in sustainability and with innovation firmly in our DNA. We are delighted to be partnering with Joby to bring short-haul, zero-emission flight to airports and cities throughout the UK.”

“Our strategic partnership combines Joby’s expertise in design, engineering and technology with the power of Virgin Atlantic’s brand and award-winning customer experience. We look forward to working together to bring Joby’s service to the UK and to deliver greater connectivity for our customers.”

JoeBen Bevirt, Founder and CEO of Joby, supports this notion. “Virgin Atlantic’s commitment to delighting its customers reflects our experience with Delta. We couldn’t imagine a better partner to work with in the UK.”

“Together, we are committed to delivering faster options for mobility across the country. This includes Virgin Atlantic and Delta customers as they head to the airport or move between UK towns and cities.”

Impact on UK Travel

The potential impact on UK travel is immense. Imagine a mere 15-minute flight from Manchester Airport to Leeds, or an 8-minute hop from Heathrow Airport to Canary Wharf. This will drastically reduce travel times from the current 80-minute car journey.

Joby envisions a comprehensive network of landing locations, offering rapid and convenient travel across the UK.

Furthermore, Joby aims to make this revolutionary travel option accessible by pricing it competitively with existing premium ground ridesharing services.

Building on their established partnership in the US, Joby and Delta Air Lines have extended their collaboration to include Virgin Atlantic in the UK. This exclusive partnership will run for at least five years post-commercial launch.

Joby recently showcased its aircraft at the 2024 Farnborough International Airshow, marking its UK debut. In July 2022, the company formally applied for validation from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), a crucial step towards bringing its service to the UK skies.

This partnership between Joby Aviation and Virgin Atlantic signifies a significant leap forward in urban air mobility.

By combining cutting-edge technology with established aviation expertise, they are paving the way for a future where efficient, sustainable, and convenient air travel is within reach.
