Vietnam Airlines is set to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) in the first half of 2025 for 50 narrowbody jets.
This move comes after the carrier signed a provisional deal with Boeing for 50 737 MAX jets in 2023. However, other manufacturers, including Airbus and COMAC, are also in the running for this significant order.
Narrowbody Order & RFP
Vietnam Airlines CEO Le Hong Ha gave comment to Reuters this week at the Association of Asia-Pacific Airlines event in Brunei. “In Vietnam we have to go through the bidding process, we have to open to others… the door is still open for everyone,” he said.
Boeing remains a strong contender for this acquisition. “Boeing is one option, they have a very good offer for us,” the CEO told Reuters. The airline presently holds plans to acquire 170 new aircraft by 2035.
The RFP is expected to attract significant interest from aircraft manufacturers. Vietnam Airlines is presently one of the fastest-growing airlines in Southeast Asia. The carrier has ambitious growth plans and is looking to modernize its fleet to meet increasing demand.
The 50 narrowbody jets will be used to support the airline’s domestic and regional network. Vietnam Airlines is particularly interested in aircraft that are fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly. The carrier is also looking for aircraft that can be easily maintained and operated.
Boeing Remains Clear Favorite
Boeing is the clear favorite to win the order, given its strong relationship with Vietnam Airlines and the provisional deal for the 737 MAX jets.
However, Airbus and COMAC are not to be underestimated. Airbus has a strong presence in the region and has been successful in winning orders from other airlines in Southeast Asia. COMAC, the Chinese aircraft manufacturer, is also making inroads into the region. The regional manufacturer is eager to secure its first major order from a major airline.
Vietnam Airlines, the flag carrier of Vietnam, has experienced significant growth in recent years. It has steadily positioned itself as a major player in the Southeast Asian aviation market.
The airline has been actively expanding its fleet and network to cater to the increasing demand for air travel, both domestically and internationally.
Fleet Expansion and Modernization
Vietnam Airlines has embarked on a fleet modernization program to enhance its operational efficiency, passenger comfort, and environmental sustainability. The airline has been acquiring modern aircraft from leading manufacturers like Boeing and Airbus. Notable additions to its fleet include:
Boeing 787 Dreamliner: This fuel-efficient wide-body aircraft has become a mainstay on long-haul routes, enabling Vietnam Airlines to connect Vietnam to major cities in Asia, Europe, and North America.
Airbus A350 XWB: Another fuel-efficient wide-body aircraft, the A350 offers a premium passenger experience and is deployed on key international routes.
Airbus A321neo: This narrow-body aircraft is ideal for short-haul and regional flights, providing improved fuel efficiency and passenger comfort.
Vietnam Airlines has been expanding its network to offer more destinations and connectivity options for passengers. The airline has launched new routes to major cities in Asia, Europe, and North America, strengthening its global presence.
Future Growth
Vietnam Airlines has ambitious plans for future growth, including further fleet expansion and network development. The airline is expected to continue investing in modern aircraft and exploring new markets to solidify its position as a leading airline in Southeast Asia.
The outcome of the narrowbody RFP will be closely watched by the aviation industry. It will be a major milestone for the winning manufacturer and will further solidify its position in the region.
