A UPS MD-11F freighter operating from Oakland International Airport (OAK) to Ontario International Airport (ONT) has declared an emergency shortly after takeoff.
Operating as UPS flight 5X2949, the freighter declared an emergency with squawk code 7700. The aircraft is currently making good a return to Oakland.

Having declared the emergency not long after departure, UPS flight 5X2949 is now expediting a return to Oakland (OAK). The nature of the emergency is not yet known.

Flight 5X2949 now landed Metropolitan Oakland International Airport (OAK), having declared an emergency shortly after takeoff.
Flight data shows the freighter service 5X2949 made an on-time departure out of Oakland at 06:33 local time.
The aircraft was in the early stages of the departure withing the San Francisco area when it terminated climb and squawked transponder code 7700.
The flight then negotiated a return and landed within less than half an hour after departure.

The aircraft conducting today’s service from Oakland to Ontario International Airport (ONT) was a McDonnell Douglas MD-11F converted freighter, registered N284UP.
This is a 26.5 year old freighter aircraft belonging to the carrier United Parcel Service (UPS). It has been an operational service with the operator since January 2006.
Prior to its tenure with the US operator, it has seen service with Switzerland’s Swiss and Brazil’s Varig since its initial delivery in December 1997.
UPS operates its own dedicated cargo airline, UPS Airlines, which stands as one of the largest in the world.
This extensive fleet, comprised of modern and fuel-efficient aircraft, traverses a vast network spanning over 815 destinations across 200 countries.
