A United Airlines flight operating from San Francisco to Beijing has declared an emergency following an attempted approach to the destination.
United Airlines flight UA888 declared the emergency approaching Beijing and is currently diverting to Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG).
Diversion to Shanghai (PVG)
Flight UA888 was conducting a descent for arrival into the destination Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) before terminating the approach earlier today.
Weather at PEK is currently IFR with a 900 foot cloudbase. This may have been the dictating factor in the decision to divert to Shanghai.
The flight is presently maintaining flight level FL230 and continuing to track for Shanghai. Flight crew are maintaining the emergency priority transponder code 7700.

United flight UA888 had commenced its descent for the destination Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) earlier today. The approach was then terminated at 8,000 feet before a brief holding period.
Flight crew then initiated the diversion south to Shanghai, squawking code 7700; likely as a low fuel state priority.
The aircraft conducting today’s UA888 rotation from San Francisco (SFO) is a Boeing 777-300ER, registered N2749U. This is a 4.7 year old widebody aircraft belonging to the US carrier United Airlines.
