United Airlines and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) will implement a development of Concourse E at Washington Dulles International Airport.
This ambitious $500 million project promises to revolutionize the airport experience when it debuts in late 2026.
The new 435,000-square-foot concourse will feature 14 gates and a cutting-edge United ClubSM location. This is made possible through collaborative efforts between United, MWAA, and strategic funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
As the D.C. region’s largest airline, United is demonstrating its commitment to growth and regional development, reinforcing its position as a key economic driver in the metropolitan area.
United’s commitment to the area is evident in its comprehensive expansion plans. The airline currently employs over 8,000 local workers and is set to open a new flight attendant training center in 2025.
Moreover, United is operating 25% more flights compared to 2023, highlighting its continued dedication to the region and its strategic vision for air travel connectivity.
United Next Plan
United CEO Scott Kirby commented on the new project, stating, “Washington Dulles has emerged as a global gateway, and these investments will deliver the world-class facility our employees and customers deserve.”
This expansion is part of United’s broader United Next plan, which has already seen the airline invest over $32 billion across its business since 2021, demonstrating a long-term commitment to infrastructure improvement and customer experience enhancement.
The project has garnered support from local political leaders. Senator Tim Kaine praised the infrastructure improvements, noting the expansion will make traveling more convenient and boost regional economic development.
Similarly, Senator Mark Warner highlighted the significance of adding 14 gates to increase flight options and enhance traveler experiences. He pointed out the project’s importance to the local community and national transportation infrastructure.
Concourse E Design and Features
The new concourse will exclusively house United gates, designed to accommodate the airline’s newest widebody and mainline aircraft. Travelers can look forward to several key improvements, including direct access to the airport’s Aerotrain station for smoother terminal navigation.
The design also includes expansive gate seating, enhanced concessions and retail spaces, and a massive 40,000-square-foot United Club. This is the largest in the network, and will increase the airport’s United Club space by 70%. These improvements reflect United’s commitment to creating a more comfortable, efficient, and enjoyable travel experience for passengers.
Expanding Flight Network
United continues to solidify its position as the region’s premier airline. In 2024, the carrier has already launched 13 new domestic routes. This represented more than any other U.S. carrier at a single airport.
The airline has introduced several notable routes, including the only nonstop service from D.C. to Anchorage, Alaska. It has also seen new routes to Mobile, Alabama, and upcoming service to Palm Springs, California. These additions demonstrate United’s strategic approach to expanding its network and meeting the evolving travel needs of passengers.
The airline is also expanding its international reach, offering nonstop flights to over a dozen world capitals. Exciting additions include inaugural nonstop service to Dakar, Senegal in May 2025, and new European destinations like Nice, France, and Venice, Italy.
Local Economic Impact
United’s growth significantly benefits the local community. In the past two years, the airline has hired over 30,000 employees systemwide, with plans to add approximately 9,000 more in 2024. Of these, more than 700 positions will be in the Washington D.C. area.
This job creation contributes to the region’s economic vitality and provides opportunities for local residents to build careers in the aviation industry.
After nearly four decades at Dulles International Airport, United continues to invest in and grow its presence in the Washington region, demonstrating a long-term commitment to local infrastructure and economic development.
By continually upgrading facilities, expanding routes, and creating employment opportunities, United is a crucial partner in the region’s economic and transportation ecosystem.
