United Airlines is set to enhance in-flight connectivity, announcing the FAA’s approval of its first Starlink-equipped aircraft type.

The approval relates to Starlink inflight connectivity aboard the airline’s regional fleet of Embraer 175 aircraft.

Passengers can anticipate a significantly enhanced travel experience, with the inaugural commercial flight scheduled for May. This comes just eight months after the Starlink partnership was unveiled.

The Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) issuance of a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for the Embraer 175 has driven the swift process.

The airline plans to introduce this cutting edge technology on a United Express Embraer 175. This will mark the commencement of a rapid deployment strategy.

United aims to equip approximately 40 regional jets with Starlink each month. The airline projects the complete installation across its two cabin regional fleet by year’s end. This will effectively span over 300 aircraft currently deployed on regional flight operations.

Beta Test Prior to May Launch

Prior to the official passenger launch in May, United will conduct a beta test on select flights. This crucial phase will ensure seamless functionality and optimize the passenger experience, guaranteeing the delivery of an exceptional onboard environment.

Grant Milstead, United’s Vice President of Digital Technology provided comment on the equipment rollout. “We are confident that our customers will embrace this enhanced connectivity, solidifying United as their preferred airline.”

“We are collaborating closely with Starlink and the FAA to expedite the installation process across our regional fleet, bringing unparalleled in-flight connectivity to a broader audience.”

United’s ambition extends beyond the Embraer regional jets. The airline will collaborate with Starlink to secure FAA STCs for all applicable United aircraft types.

This includes over 16 regional and mainline aircraft models. The FAA’s STC process, involving intricate design, installation, testing, and approval stages, underscores the commitment to safety and reliability.

Earlier this month, United provided an in-depth look at the Starlink installation process, highlighting the significant operational advantages of the system.

The Starlink equipment, characterized by its compact size and light weight design, facilitates a streamlined installation and maintenance process.

Compared to traditional in-flight Wi-Fi systems, Starlink’s reduced weight translates to improved fuel efficiency, while its robust design ensures superior reliability and weather resistance.

The Starlink service will be offered free of charge to all MileagePlus® members, unlocking a number of in flight entertainment possibilities.

With speeds reaching up to 250 megabits per second (Mbps), a remarkable 50-fold increase over current regional aircraft speeds, passengers can indulge in seamless streaming, online shopping, gaming, and a host of other digital activities.
