United Airlines Flight Washington-Austin Declares Emergency

United Airlines flight UA381, a 737-900ER from Washington IAD, declared an emergency in Austin after a wing flap problem on approach.

A United Airlines flight inbound from Washington, VA declared an emergency on approach to Austin on Sunday, 5 May 2024.

United Airlines flight UA381, a Boeing 737-900ER from Washington Dulles Airport (IAD), executed a missed approach at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport before declaring an emergency.

The aircraft reportedly experienced a wing flap issue on the initial approach into Austin, whereupon the flight crew initiated a period of holding in the airport vicinity.

During the holding period, flight crew declared an emergency with transponder code 7700. The flight subsequently made a second approach and landed without further incident.

Flight data shows that flight UA381 made an on-time departure out of Washington Dulles airport at 0833 local time on 5 May.

The aircraft then set course normally for Austin, TX, climbing to cruising level FL330 (33,000 feet) for the service.

Missed Approach & Holding

Letdown and descent procedures were conducted normally, and the aircraft had descended to approximately 1000 feet before executing a go around.

Flight crew then conducted a period of holding at 3000 feet in the vicinity of the airport before making the second approach attempt as an emergency landing.

Transponder code 7700 had been squawked during the holding procedure at 3000 feet.

The aircraft conducting the UA381 rotation from Washington Dulles was a Boeing 737-900ER, registered N39463.

This is an 11.5 year old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the US carrier United Airlines. It is been in service with the airline since its initial delivery in December 2012.
