A United Airlines flight preparing to depart from Houston to New York had to be evacuated after it caught fire during takeoff on Sunday 2 February.

United Airlines flight UA1382, operated by an Airbus A319-100, was preparing to depart from Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) around 8.35am local time. The flight was to be a scheduled service to New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA).

During the takeoff roll on runway 15R, passengers saw smoke and flames emanating from the aircraft’s right wing. As a result, the takeoff was rejected at high speed and the aircraft was brought to a stop on the runway. Cabin crew then evacuated the aircraft via emergency slides and airstairs.

According to the Aviation Herald, flight crew reported a failure of the right-hand engine and requested fire services to attend.

A video taken by one of the passengers shows the aircraft being brought to a stop, as a flight attendant instructs passengers to remain seated. The footage shows passengers standing on the tarmac following the emergency disembarkation.

The FAA confirmed that the flight was operating with 104 passengers and 5 crew members. No injuries have been reported as a result of the ground fire incident.

According to the statement by the aviation regulator, the takeoff was “safely aborted” due to a “reported engine issue.” “Passengers deplaned on the runway and were bused to the terminal,” the FAA said their statement.

The Houston Fire Department attended the scene and assisted in the disembarkation of occupants.
