United Airlines flight UA187, operated by a Boeing 787-9, declared an emergency with transponder code 7700 as it transited the Namibian coast on track for Newark. The flight is currently conducting a direct return to Johannesburg.

Flight UA187 has climbed to cruising level FL340 after departure from Johannesburg O.R. Tambo International Airport and was on flight plan track passing the Namibian coast when flight crew squawked code 7700.
The flight then initiated a direct return track for the departure airport. The nature of the emergency prompting the return is not yet known.

Since declaring the emergency, United flight UA187 has maintained FL330 and continues to make good a direct return to O.R. Tambo International Airport. Flight crew are maintaining the emergency priority transponder code 7700.

United Airlines flight UA187 is continuing its return to Johannesburg, squawking code 7700 and maintaining cruising altitude FL330. The nature of the emergency is still not known. the scheduled service was originally bound for Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).
The aircraft conducting the UA187 service is a Boeing 787-9, registered N24973. This is a7.2 year old widebody aircraft belonging to the carrier United Airlines. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in February 2018.
