United Airlines B767-400 Returns to Newark with Hydraulic Problem

A United Airlines Boeing 767-400 departing for San Juan, Puerto Rico returned to Newark (EWR) after reporting a hydraulic problem on 18 January.

A United Airlines Boeing 767-400 departing for San Juan, Puerto Rico returned to Newark, NJ after reporting a hydraulic problem on 18 January 2025.

United Airlines flight UA2143 had conducted a departure from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). The flight was to be a scheduled service to San Juan Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU). It was being operated by a Boeing 767-400, registered N69059.

Following departure, the flight had reached cruising altitude when flight crew requested a precautionary return to Newark. According to the online source Aviation Herald, flight crew had reported a low hydraulic level on the left-hand side. Despite the problem, they expected to make a normal landing on return to the origin airport.

Once established on approach to runway 22L, advised that no ground assistance was required on landing. Flight crew declined the ATC offer for an approach to the longer runway 22R.

The flight subsequently landed without further incident just under one hour after initiating the precautionary return.

The airline mustered a replacement aircraft to complete the onwards scheduled service to San Juan.

Flight Details


Flight data shows that flight UA2143 had made an initial departure from Newark Liberty International Airport at 1004 local time on 18 January.

The flighted then set course normally, climbing to flight level FL330 for the south-easterly service to Puerto Rico. The aircraft was approximately 200 nautical miles to the south-east of Newark on flight plan track when the return was initiated.

The aircraft conducting the UA2143 service to San Juan Luis Munoz Marin International Airport was a Boeing 767-400, registered N69059. This is a 23-year-old aircraft belonging to the carrier United Airlines.

It has been in operational service with the airline since October 2010. Prior to its present service, it was previously operated by legacy carrier Continental Airlines since its initial delivery from the factory in February 2002.
