In the last few moments, a United Airlines Boeing 767 operating UA147 to Newark has declared an emergency not long after departure from London.
N665UA is the aircraft involved in the incident.

UPDATE #1 @ 1559 UK time – The aircraft has made a u-turn following the emergency declaration.
UPDATE #2 @ 1604 UK time – N665UA is the aircraft involved in the incident.
Furthermore, as per Planespotters, N665UA is a 26.7 year old Boeing 767-300 that was delivered to the airline in July 1998.
Of the 767-300 variant, the carrier has 37 of them in their fleet.
Within the 37, all but two are in active service, with an average fleet age of 29.1 years.

UPDATE #3 @ 1606 UK time – Emergency United Airlines flight UA147 from London Heathrow to Newark is currently headed in the direction of Gatwick.
It is unclear whether the aircraft will be diverting there or will be returning to LHR at this present moment.

UPDATE #4 @ 1615 UK time – UA147 looks to be heading out of the UK based on present position.
However, this could be a long-winded way back into Heathrow in order to burn fuel and run checklists.

UPDATE #5 @ 1621 UK time – The aircraft is now making a turn.
It looks like it will be heading back to Heathrow, but this could change if the situation deteriorates.
UPDATE #6 @ 1624 UK time – UA147 is descending out of FL140 in the direction of Heathrow.

UPDATE #7 @ 1627 UK time – The aircraft is approaching an extended base leg for the 27s into Heathrow.
At this stage, the cause of the emergency is still unclear.


UPDATE #8 @ 1631 UK time – The Boeing 767 is now on final approach for it’s emergency landing.
United Airlines has confirmed via their flight status page that this is due to a technical issue.

UPDATE #9 @ 1637 UK time – TOUCHDOWN!
Emergency United Airlines flight UA147, originally bound for Newark, has appeared to have landed safely back into London Heathrow following it’s 7700 declaration.
It is understood that this was due to a hydraulics failure involving the flaps.
As soon as we have more information pertinent to this, then we will update you accordingly.
For now, this remains a developing story pending additional updates which may come through.

UPDATE #10 @ 1701 UK time – Correcting the record. As per @FlightEmergency on X, it was an engine failure.
