A UK-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 was forced to make a precautionary landing in Moscow, Russia on Wednesday, September 4, 2024. The aircraft, en route from Delhi to Birmingham, experienced technical difficulties that prompted the diversion and subsequent emergency landing.

Air India flight AI113 had departed Delhi Indira Ghandi International Airport (DEL) on a scheduled service to Birmingham International Airport (BHX).

The aircraft was en route in cruising flight at flight level FL400. Flight crew reported a technical problem on board and elected to carry out a diversion. The aircraft made an unscheduled landing at Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport around 9:30 PM local time.

The airline has not confirmed the specifics of the technical problem encountered. The Moscow airport put out a statement confirming that the aircraft’s flight crew had requested an unscheduled landing due to “technical problems”.

All 258 passengers and 17 crew members on board the flight safely disembarked at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport. Operating crew conducted the landing without incident and there were no reported injuries.

Air India has issued a statement confirming the incident and assuring that all passengers were safe. The airline is currently investigating the cause of the technical problems that led to the emergency landing.

The aircraft conducting the AI113 service to Birmingham was a Boeing 787-8, registered VT-ANP. This is a 10.4-year-old wide-body aircraft belonging to the carrier Air India. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in June 2014.

Yesterday’s unscheduled diversion also follows an incident on a long-haul Air India service in July. In that instance, a potential issue in the hold forced a flight from Delhi to San Francisco to divert to Krasnoyarsk Airport in Russia.
