A tire has exploded during maintenance on a Delta Air Lines Boeing 757 in Atlanta, resulting in the tragic deaths of two maintenance workers, and injuring another.
The tragic accident occurred at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) on August 27, 2024. The two workers killed in the accident were a Delta Air Lines employee and a contractor. The tired person, who sustained serious injuries, was a Delta Air Lines employee.
Atlanta Maintenance Accident
The incident took place at the airline’s Atlanta TechOps maintenance facility, where two workers were changing a tire on the aircraft.
The tire unexpectedly exploded, fatally injuring two employees who were removing it. The explosion seriously injured a third worker, who was taken to the hospital. The injured worker’s condition remains unknown.
Delta Air Lines issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss of its team members. The airline confirmed that the accident had taken place during maintenance work in the early hours of the morning. Mechanics were performing the work at the Atlanta Technical Operations Maintenance facility (TOC 3).
Delta has extended its full support to the families and colleagues of the victims during this difficult time.
Emergency Response and Investigation
Speaking to reporters, Atlanta Police Department spokesperson Major Kelley Collier gave details of the emergency response. He confirmed that emergency personnel had responded to an assistance call around 5.00am local time.
An investigation into the cause of the explosion is currently underway. Authorities are working to determine the circumstances that led to the tragic event.
The aircraft under maintenance was a Boeing 757-200, registered N683DA. This is a 31.5 year old aircraft belonging to the carrier Delta Air Lines. The airframe has been in operational service since March 1993.
It is understood that the aircraft had flown in to Atlanta from Las Vegas on Sunday.
