A TUI fly Netherlands Boeing 787-8 operating a service from Brussels to Hurghada, Egypt returned to Brussels after sustaining a lightning strike on 22 December 2024.
TUI flight TB3011 had conducted a departure from Brussels Airport (BRU). The aircraft was conducting a scheduled service bound for Hurghada International Airport (HRG).

As the aircraft was on climb after departure, it sustained a lightning strike. Flight crew elected to make a precautionary return to the origin airport.
A direct return was then carried out, and the flight landed without further incident on a runway 25L Brussels Airport. The return was made just under 55 minutes after the flight’s initial departure.
According to the online source Aviation Herald, passengers on board the aircraft reported seeing a flash before hearing a bang. A faint smell of burning in the aircraft cabin was then reported.
The airline subsequently confirmed that the aircraft had made a return to Brussels as a precautionary measure. Because flight crew duty time limits were consideration, the passengers were transferred to hotels.

Flight data shows that flight TB3011 had made an on-time departure out of Brussels at 1335 local time on 22 December.
Following its takeoff, the flight was still on climb and passing through flight level FL320 when the lightning strike occurred. Flight crew subsequently terminated the climb procedure and a descent and direct track for Brussels was then carried out.
The aircraft conducting the TB3011 service to Hurghada International Airport was a Boeing 787-8, registered PH-TFJ. This is a 10 year old wide-body aircraft belonging to the carrier TUI fly Netherlands. It has been in operational service with TUI Airways since October 2017. The aircraft was originally operated by now-defunct operator Thomson Airways from its initial delivery from the factory in January 2015
