Trigana Air ATR 42 Damaged in Aborted Takeoff From Serui

A Trigana Air ATR 42-500 has suffered significant damage from a runway excursion following an aborted takeoff in Serui, Indonesia today.

A Trigana Air ATR 42-500 has suffered a runway excursion during an aborted takeoff in Serui, Indonesia.

The regional flight was preparing to depart from Serui for Jayapura. 42 passengers and 6 crew members were safety evacuated and according to preliminary information, no injuries were sustained.

The Chairperson of the Papua Province PKK TP, Mrs. Kerdina Ramses Limbong and the Papua Province PKK TP group were amongst the passenger complement, according to local news media.


Trigana Air Runway Excursion Serui


The runway excursion event took place at Serui Stevanus Rumbewas Airport in Serui, Indonesia, after the flight crew aborted a takeoff.

During the procedure, the aircraft lost directional control and veered off the left-hand side of the runway. This resulted in a main undercarriage collapse when the aircraft impacted rough terrain.

According to local news sources, the flight has recently landed from Biak, and was preparing to depart for the onwards service to Jayapura.

The reason for the rejected takeoff is not yet known. Although no injuries were reported, several passengers were transported to Serui Regional Hospital for medical evaluation.

The aircraft sustained significant damage as a result of the incident. Photos surfacing on social media give a sense of the scale of the damage to the twin turboprop aircraft.

It is understood that the aircraft has subsequently been written off as a result of the runway incident.

The aircraft conducting the regional service from Serui was an ATR 42-500, registered PK-YSP. This is a 26.7 year old twin turboprop commuter aircraft belonging to the carrier Trigana Air. It has been in operational service with the airline since November 2018.

Indonesian authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the runway excursion. The investigation is ongoing.
