Toyota has contributed invaluable automotive manufacturing expertise to the project, with their engineers now working hand-in-hand with Joby’s team at their California facility.
The partnership deepened in 2023 when the companies formalized an agreement for Toyota to supply critical aircraft components for production.
“This overseas flight represents a major step toward making clean air travel an everyday reality,” said JoeBen Bevirt, Joby’s Founder and CEO. “We’re proud to share Toyota’s vision for the future of transportation and to demonstrate how this technology can transform mobility worldwide.”
The landmark event attracted numerous distinguished guests, including Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda and representatives from Japan’s Civil Aviation Bureau.
Moving Towards Urban Air Mobility
Toyota’s Executive Vice President and CTO, Hiroki Nakajima, shared his enthusiasm about air mobility’s potential to fundamentally transform society’s perception of distance and time. He emphasizing the technology’s ability to enrich people’s lives through new transportation options.
Joby’s revolutionary air taxi represents a significant leap forward in urban air mobility. The aircraft is designed to accommodate one pilot and four passengers. It is capable of impressive speeds of up to 200 miles per hour.
What sets this vehicle apart is its combination of high-performance capabilities with environmental consciousness. It operates with zero emissions and generates only a fraction of the noise produced by conventional helicopters.
The innovative aircraft will address multiple transportation challenges facing modern society. By providing an alternative to ground-based transportation, it promises to alleviate traffic congestion in urban areas. At the same time, it offers a far lower environmental impact.
The versatility of the aircraft makes it equally suitable for both urban and rural environments. It offers a flexible solution to diverse transportation needs across Japan and globally.
Joby Aviation: Progress to Date
Since its establishment in 2009, Joby has demonstrated its commitment to thorough testing and development, completing thousands of test flights.
The company has already made waves with successful demonstrations in high-profile locations, including exhibitions at New York City’s Downtown Manhattan Heliport.
Toyota Investment
This latest achievement comes on the heels of Toyota’s announcement of an additional $500 million investment in Joby, bringing their total investment to an impressive $894 million.
Toyota’s substantial financial commitment will support the crucial phases of aircraft certification and commercial production. The investment will establish a manufacturing alliance that will be instrumental in launching the first phase of commercialization.
The investment structure involves two equal payments, each subject to standard regulatory approvals and specific conditions.
These conditions include the finalization of collaborative and commercial agreements. The second payment is additionally contingent upon establishing terms for a strategic alliance. This will be focused on commercial manufacturing, along with other specified requirements.
This partnership between Toyota and Joby represents a significant step forward in the evolution of urban air mobility. It will combine Toyota’s manufacturing expertise with Joby’s innovative aviation technology to bring sustainable air transportation closer to reality.
