Toronto Pearson Marks a Record Year, Welcoming 8 New Airlines in 2024

Toronto Pearson International Airport officially welcomed eight new airlines in 2024, surpassing any other major airport in North America.

Toronto Pearson International Airport has cemented its position as a global travel hub, achieving a remarkable milestone in 2024.

The airport welcomed a record-breaking eight new airlines, surpassing any other major airport in North America.

This influx of carriers signifies a significant expansion of connectivity, offering passengers unprecedented travel options and bolstering Canada’s economic growth.

Timeline of 2024 Airline Arrivals  


The arrival of these new airlines unlocks a diverse range of destinations, connecting travelers to both familiar and exotic locales.

H1 2024 Arrivals

  • Sun Country (April 2024)

Sun Country Airlines kicked off the year in April with twice-weekly flights to Minneapolis, conveniently serving the substantial passenger traffic between the two cities.

In a challenging landscape for low-cost carriers, Sun Country Airlines Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: SNCY) has demonstrated remarkable resilience, reporting its eighth consecutive profitable quarter.

  • ITA Airways (May 2024)

May witnessed a flurry of new arrivals, including ITA Airways, marking its inaugural Canadian destination with daily summer flights to Rome. Swiss International Air Lines expanded its Canadian service, adding five weekly summer flights to Zurich.  

Alaska Airlines joined the fray in May, offering daily flights to Seattle and catering to the significant demand for travel to the West Coast.

BermudAir also commenced operations in May, providing convenient three-weekly flights to the idyllic island nation of Bermuda.  

H2 2024 Arrivals

  • Hainan Airlines (November 2024)

The latter half of 2024 saw the return of Hainan Airlines to Toronto Pearson after a brief hiatus, resuming weekly flights to Beijing.

  • Qatar Airways (December 2024)
  • Royal Air Maroc (December 2024)

December witnessed the highly anticipated arrival of Qatar Airways, launching three-weekly flights to Doha. This strategic route unlocks a wealth of travel possibilities to the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, significantly enhancing connectivity for travelers seeking to explore these regions.  

Rounding out the year, Royal Air Maroc joined the fold with three-weekly flights to Casablanca, connecting passengers to this vibrant Moroccan city and catering to the substantial travel demand between Canada and Morocco, exceeding 200,000 passengers annually.  

54 Airlines Serving 180 Destinations


“Pearson now serves over 180 destinations worldwide with 54 airlines,” stated Deborah Flint, President and CEO of Toronto Pearson. “This remarkable growth in connectivity enhances travel options for Canadians while driving economic benefits for our country.”  

The influx of new routes and destinations has significantly boosted international travel options. Since 2022, Toronto Pearson has added over eight million international seats, solidifying its position as a leader in international travel departures within North America.
