American Airlines Soars High

American Airlines continues to dominate the US market, holding a healthy 21% share of departing one-way seats.

While Southwest Airlines remains their closest competitor, the gap between the two has widened slightly this month.

Delta Air Lines sits comfortably in third place. Notably, the combined capacity of the “Big Four” airlines (American, Southwest, Delta, and United) accounts for a significant 73% of the market.

Allegiant Takes Off: Fastest Growing Carrier

While the established giants hold strong positions, Allegiant is making a name for itself as the fastest-growing airline this month.

The carrier enjoyed a capacity increase of a noteworthy 32% compared to May 2024. This suggests a strategic move by Allegiant to capitalize on specific market opportunities.

Los Angeles (LAX) Takes Center Stage

As far as busiest US routes go, Los Angeles (LAX) emerges as a major hub in June, with a whopping four of the top ten busiest routes starting or ending there.

This indicates a surge in travel demand to and from this West Coast metropolis. However, growth patterns are mixed across these top routes.

Some, like Anchorage-Seattle and Honolulu-Los Angeles, are experiencing significant increases in departing seats (19.8% and 14.6% respectively).

Meanwhile others, such as Atlanta-Orlando and Las Vegas-Los Angeles, are contracting. This highlights the dynamic nature of travel preferences.

Top 10 Airports

Atlanta Reigns Supreme, Seattle and Orlando Make a Comeback

Looking at airports, Atlanta (ATL) maintains its position as the undisputed leader in terms of departing one-way seat capacity, boasting a considerable lead over competitors.

Notably, Seattle (SEA) and Orlando (MCO) have re-entered the top ten this month, indicating a potential shift in travel patterns.

It’s worth noting that while the top ten airports account for a substantial 35.6% of capacity, the US boasts a robust network with a total of 659 airports offering scheduled services.

Conclusion

OAG’s data provides valuable insights into the current state of the US domestic air travel market. American Airlines remains the dominant force, but Allegiant’s impressive growth suggests a dynamic landscape.

Los Angeles is a clear hub for air travel, while Atlanta retains its top airport position. With several airports experiencing changes in traffic, it will be interesting to see how these trends evolve in the coming months.
