A Thai Airways Airbus A350-900 conducting an arrival from Melbourne, Australia suffered a temporary runway excursion on landing in Bangkok, Thailand on 14 September 2024.
Thai Airways flight TG466, an Airbus A350-900 had just arrived from Melbourne. It was conducting an approach to runway 19L Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK).

During the landing roll, the aircraft temporarily veered off the left-hand edge of the runway before directional control was re-established. The aircraft was then brought to a stop on runway centreline before exiting the active runway and taxiing to the apron hardstanding normally.
According to a preliminary report by Thailand’s aviation regulator AAIIC, the aircraft ran off the left side of runway during the landing at Suvarnabhumi Airport. This resulted in damage to seven runway edge lights.
The occurrence was classed as a serious incident by the Thai regulatory body. The aircraft was then grounded in Bangkok until its return to service on 25 September.
When the conditions at the time of the flight’s arrival showed the presence of scattered thunderstorms and heavy rain. Visibility was reducing to approximately 3000 m in passing heavy rain showers.

Flight data shows that flight TG466 had made an on-time departure out of Melbourne Airport (MEL) at 1347 local time on 14 September. The flight had been conducted normally, climbing to flight level FL400 (40,000 feet) for the northerly service to Thailand.
Descent and approach procedures had been similarly conducted normally, and the aircraft was cleared to land on runway 19L.
The aircraft conducting the TG466 service from Melbourne was an Airbus A350-900, registered HS-THD. This is a 7.5 year old wide-body aircraft belonging to the carrier Thai Airways. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in April 2017.
The serious incident will now be the subject of an investigation by Thailand aviation regulator AAIIC.
