Teesside Airport has secured its position as the UK’s Best Airport for Leisure Travel, winning the prestigious title for the second consecutive year at the celebrated British Travel Awards.

The achievement was celebrated at the glamorous awards ceremony in London on Tuesday evening 19 November 2024, marking another milestone for the airport. The airport has undergone a remarkable transformation since returning to public ownership in 2019.

Teesside Takes the Award Again

Teesside triumphed again, beating competitors East Midlands and Liverpool Airports in the public vote. The competition drew over 1.2 million votes across all categories from more than 400,000 participants, demonstrating the scale and significance of this achievement for the regional transport hub.

The comprehensive awards recognize excellence across the travel industry, including travel companies, cruise operators, travel agents, hotel chains, airlines, and airports. Teesside’s victory highlights its growing reputation as a key player in the UK aviation sector.

Located between Darlington and Middlesbrough, Teesside International Airport has undergone significant modernization in recent years, including a complete terminal renovation worth £3.5 million.

The upgrades have introduced new security equipment, improved passenger facilities, and enhanced retail offerings including local food vendors.

A Strong 2024 Performance

Teesside’s success follows a remarkable year featuring a new Ryanair route to Malaga, reinstated TUI flights to Dalaman, and the highest summer passenger numbers in 15 years. The airport also boasts streamlined security processes, typically getting passengers from arrival to departure gates in under 15 minutes.

“Our airport’s impact across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool and beyond is truly remarkable,” said Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen.

“The industry recognizes our significant progress, and 2025 looks even more promising with Malaga returning to our departure boards. Success breeds success – and this recognition reflects our team’s dedication.”

Phil Forster, Teesside International Airport Managing Director, expressed gratitude for the accolade. “We’re incredibly thankful to our loyal passengers who supported us again this year. While we know Teesside is a favorite among travelers, receiving this award again validates our efforts.”

The airport has also strengthened its business credentials, developing its 270-acre business park and securing major commercial partnerships.

The recent FedEx agreement marks a significant step into cargo operations, while the new Airbourne Colours painting facility diversifies the airport’s revenue streams.

Looking Ahead

Summer 2025’s flight schedule showcases the airport’s expanding route network, featuring Ryanair’s services to Faro, Majorca, and Corfu, plus year-round Alicante flights and the new Malaga route.

The schedule reflects Teesside’s commitment to offering diverse destinations for both leisure and business travelers.

TUI, one of Britain’s largest holiday companies, has shown growing confidence in Teesside by expanding its presence this year. The airline has added Dalaman flights alongside twice-weekly Majorca services. Meanwhile, Balkan Holidays reported record passenger numbers on their Bourgas, Bulgaria routes in 2024.

The airport’s strategic partnership with KLM continues to flourish, with three daily Amsterdam Schiphol flights connecting travelers to over 160 global destinations.

This connection has proved vital for both business and leisure travelers from the North East region.

Looking ahead, Teesside Airport’s successful trajectory seems set to continue, with new routes, improved facilities, and growing passenger numbers. This is steadily cementing its position as a key regional transport hub and economic driver for the North East.
