Teesside Airport has this week boosted their cargo presence with the first set of FedEx flights operating out of the region.
This represents strong news for the airport based in the North-East of England.
Without further ado, let’s get into it…
The New FedEx Flights from Teesside Airport…
The new flights from FedEx is part of a five year agreement signed with an airfreight handling facility at Teesside Airport.
It is understood that this is also a base transfer from Newcastle into the new airport.
Furthermore, this means on the cargo front, the airport will have an additional eight weekly outbound and inbound flights.
This will also provide capacity for around 196,000lbs of cargo each week, in a big step up for the airport.
Hitting The Ground Running with New Hangar…
Commenting on the new flights to Teesside Airport was Alun Cornish, Managing Director of Ramp and Gateways Operations for Northern Europe for FedEx:
“It’s always a joy to see the first plane come in to land at a new site.”
“Teesside International Airport was chosen because it provides excellent access to Yorkshire and the Northeast and we’re seeing increased import and export demand from customers in this region, as businesses in this area continue to grow in number and strength.”
“Our road operation being based out of the airport at Hangar 1 means we’ll also be able to get packages from flights into the road even more quickly, making the decision to set-up at Teesside even more beneficial for our customers.”
Adding to this was Teesside International Airport Managing Director Phil Forster:
“It is fantastic to welcome the first FedEx flight under this new agreement, which builds on our excellent relationship with a world-leading company.
“This is a significant step into the cargo market and we look forward to growing our operations further in the future thanks to the investments taking place across the airport estate.”
Overall…
In conclusion, this is a big step for Teesside Airport securing a major cargo operator like FedEx.
With a series of weekly flights, this will bring in strong cargo revenue throughout the year.
All eyes will be on how the new flights perform, as well as whether there is scope to expand further.
It’s great news for the airport, who is wanting to push further on the scene within the UK.
