TAAG Angola Airlines has received its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner from Boeing [NYSE: BA], showcasing the carrier’s fresh livery design.

This delivery is the first of four ultra-efficient widebody aircraft that will strengthen the airline’s international reach and modernize its fleet. The fleet upgrade positions Angola as a key destination for travelers and commerce throughout Africa and beyond.

Arrival Ahead of Angola Liberation Day

The new Dreamliner, leased through AerCap, touched down in Luanda just before Angola’s Liberation Day celebrations on 4 February.

This milestone comes nearly five decades after TAAG Angola welcomed its first Boeing aircraft, a 737-200. It highlights the longstanding relationship between the airline and the aircraft manufacturer.

“This 787-9 delivery represents a crucial advancement in our fleet modernization initiative,” explained TAAG Angola Airlines CEO Nelson Pedro Rodrigues de Oliveira.

“The aircraft delivers the performance and flexibility we require to meet expanding market needs, upgrade our widebody fleet, and enhance our passenger experience with state-of-the-art comfort features and technology.”

TAAG Angola Current Fleet

The airline currently maintains a diverse Boeing fleet, including five 777-300ERs, three 777-200ERs, and seven Next-Generation 737s.

These aircraft serve 12 destinations spanning Africa, Europe, South America, and China. With the addition of the 787 Dreamliner, TAAG Angola plans to initially expand its European routes.

It will explore new opportunities in Asian and North American markets, potentially doubling its international presence within the next decade.

Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing Commercial Sales vice president for Africa, stated, “The 787 Dreamliner perfectly complements TAAG Angola’s existing Boeing fleet.”

“Our half-century partnership with TAAG Angola Airlines builds on mutual trust and shared vision, and we anticipate continuing this journey of collaboration and innovation into the next generation of air travel.”

Part of Fleet Modernization Strategy

Ordered in 2023, the 787 Dreamliner stands at the forefront of TAAG Angola’s modernization strategy. The aircraft’s cutting-edge technology and fuel efficiency deliver up to 25% reduced fuel consumption and carbon emissions compared to previous models. It provides superior passenger comfort through improved cabin pressure, larger windows, and advanced air filtration systems.

To support environmental sustainability, TAAG Angola Airlines is partnering with Boeing to acquire CO2 emissions reduction credits linked to blended Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) through book-and-claim accounting.

Local distributors will supply this credited SAF to nearby airports for various carriers’ use, demonstrating TAAG’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact across its operations.

Boeing’s Market Presence in Africa

Boeing’s market research indicates Africa will require 1,170 new aircraft over the next 20 years. There will be a particular emphasis on fuel-efficient widebody aircraft for long-haul routes.

For more than 75 years, Boeing aircraft have served as the foundation of Africa’s commercial aviation. Currently, over 60 African airlines operate approximately 500 Boeing aircraft. This represents nearly 70% of the continent’s commercial fleet, making Boeing a crucial partner in Africa’s aviation development.
