Swissport International is set deliver comprehensive ground handling services for Lufthansa Group airlines at London Heathrow Airport starting April 2025.
The newly secured five-year agreement showcases Swissport’s extensive experience in managing large-scale airport operations and reinforces its position as a global leader in aviation services.
The major contract positions Swissport to manage over 40 daily flights for Lufthansa Group’s carriers at one of the world’s premier airports. The contract will extend through to 2030.
Services will span passenger assistance, ramp operations, baggage handling, aircraft cleaning, cargo management, and premium lounge services.

Support for Lufthansa Group Airlines
This comprehensive service package will support all flights operated by Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines. It will ensure a consistent and high-quality support across the entire airline group.
Karen Cox, CEO of Swissport UK and Ireland, spoke with enthusiasm about the partnership. “This extension of our collaboration with Lufthansa Group at their largest overseas hub demonstrates their confidence in our capabilities.”
“Our dedication to safety, environmental responsibility, innovative solutions, and exceptional customer service perfectly matches Lufthansa Group’s operational standards. We’re committed to delivering seamless, safe operations that meet both airline requirements and passenger expectations at this crucial international gateway.”

Swissport Investment in Ground Equipment
In preparation for the April launch, Swissport is making substantial investments in new ground service equipment. This will aim to ensure optimal performance from day one.
Demonstrating its environmental commitment, over 80 percent of new motorized vehicles will be electric. This will mark a significant step forward in reducing the carbon footprint of airport operations.
All new equipment at Heathrow will feature advanced damage prevention systems, essential for maintaining efficient airport operations and protecting valuable aviation assets.
Introduction of Digital Systems
The implementation of state-of-the-art technology extends beyond just equipment. Swissport plans to introduce innovative digital solutions for real-time flight monitoring, resource allocation, and passenger processing.
These technological advancements will enhance operational efficiency and contribute to improved on-time performance for Lufthansa Group flights.

Relationship at UK and Irish Airports
Swissport’s relationship with Lufthansa Group extends across multiple UK and Irish airports, including Newcastle, Dublin, Birmingham, London Gatwick, and Cork. Here, the company has consistently demonstrated its ability to deliver high-quality ground handling services.
The company already handles cargo operations for Lufthansa Group’s airlines at its advanced Heathrow cargo facilities, processing thousands of tonnes of cargo annually.
This new contract strengthens Swissport’s position at Heathrow, where it currently employs more than 800 staff members and serves approximately 40 airlines, confirming its leadership in UK airport services.
The company plans to expand its workforce and invest in comprehensive training programs to ensure service excellence across all operations.
Summary
The new contract represents a significant milestone in the aviation industry’s post-pandemic recovery. By combining experienced personnel, advanced equipment, and innovative technologies, Swissport aims to set new standards in ground handling services at one of the world’s busiest airports.
The partnership will not only benefit the airlines and their passengers but also contribute to the overall operational efficiency at London Heathrow Airport.
