SWISS A320 Returns to Athens With Smoke Detection Fault

SWISS flight LX1843 was outbound from Athens International Airport (ATH) when the flight crew reported a technical fault. The issue related to the aircraft’s smoke detection system.

A Swiss International Airlines Airbus A320-200 operating a service from Athens, Greece to Zürich, Switzerland returned to the origin airport due to a technical issue on 3 August 2024.

The operating crew made the decision to make a precautionary return to Athens (ATH) following the technical problem. A direct return track was initiated and the aircraft landed without incident approximately one hour after its initial departure.

Following a ground stop of just over three hours, the aircraft was able to depart again and complete the scheduled service to Zürich Airport (ZRH).

Flight Details

Flight data shows that flight LX1843 had made a slightly delayed departure out of Athens International Airport. Actual time of departure is logged as 0727 local time, against the scheduled departure time of 0655 local.

The flight then set because normally and climbed to flight level FL320 (32,000 feet) for the service to Switzerland.

The aircraft was on track approximately 150 nautical miles to the north-west of Athens when the decision was made to return to the origin airport.

The aircraft conducting the LX1843 service to Zürich was an Airbus A320-200, registered HB-IJO. This is a 27.4-year-old wide-body aircraft belonging to the national carrier Swiss International Airlines.

It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in April 1997.
