LATAM Airlines Group S.A. celebrated its return to the New York Stock Exchange yesterday at 9:30 AM, marking a significant comeback after leaving in 2020 during the pandemic and subsequent restructuring.
This return is particularly significant as LATAM’s relationship with NYSE stretches back to 1997 when it first listed as LAN Chile. It blazed a trail as the first Latin American airline to offer American Depositary Receipts (ADRs).
LATAM: A Strong Return
During the opening bell ceremony, LATAM Airlines Group S.A. Chairman Ignacio Cueto captured the significance of the moment. “We’re starting a fresh chapter in LATAM’s journey. Our goals are to lead, innovate, and expand in ways that benefit our customers, communities, markets, and the world.”
This sentiment was echoed by CEO Roberto Alvo, who emphasized the timing’s significance. “Returning to the world’s premier stock market couldn’t come at a better time. Our strong performance this year has led us to revise our 2024 financial forecasts upward. Today’s milestone reflects our team’s dedication and strengthens our resolve.”
The airline’s ambitious growth strategy is backed by impressive expansion plans and solid operational metrics. LATAM projects capacity growth of 15-16% for 2024, measured in available seat kilometers (ASK).
Fleet Expansion Plans
This growth is supported by a substantial fleet expansion program, with commitments for over 120 new aircraft through 2030.
The order includes 106 narrow-body and 19 wide-body planes, including a recent Boeing purchase that secured coveted production slots through the end of the decade.
LATAM’s current fleet comprises 341 aircraft, with 56 Boeing and 263 Airbus aircraft. The airline has strategically secured competitive pricing for 90% of its fleet through 2029, with cost increases limited to the integration of new-generation aircraft.
This fleet strategy underpins LATAM’s position as South America’s largest airline group and the world’s tenth-largest carrier. It now serves an impressive 220,000 daily passengers across 164 destinations in 31 countries.
Cargo Division
The airline’s cargo division, LATAM Cargo Group, has established itself as a regional powerhouse, operating the most comprehensive cargo network in South America with 22 dedicated freighter aircraft, complemented by belly cargo capacity in passenger planes.
Codesharing
LATAM’s unique position as the only airline group connecting South America with North America, Europe, Oceania, and Africa is strengthened by partnerships with 57 airlines, including 27 codeshare agreements and a strategic joint venture with Delta Airlines.
Enhanced Customer Experience
LATAM stands out by offering premium seats on all flights while maintaining flexible travel options. Recent improvements include:
- Boeing 787 cabin renovations adding 24 aircraft to the upgrade program
- Free Wi-Fi for LATAM Pass members on regional flights
- Planned VIP lounge in Lima and renovations in Miami and São Paulo by 2025
- Complete narrow-body fleet Wi-Fi installation by 2025
Operational Performance
With over 80% on-time performance, LATAM ranks among the world’s top three most punctual airline groups. This efficiency generates annual savings exceeding $130 million. The airline maintains South America’s largest maintenance facilities in Santiago and São Carlos.
Future Outlook
Looking ahead to 2025, LATAM has set itself some clear performance targets. The carrier is anticipating high single-digit capacity growth.
These targets signal LATAM’s confident outlook and its drive to position itself as a leading global airline group.
