Strengthened Air Links: China Southern & Malaysia Airlines Expand Codeshare

A strengthening of air links in Asia has taken place this week with China Southern & Malaysia Airlines expanding their codeshare.

Information has been released by both sides pertinent to this expansion, which we will get into in this article.

The Expanded Codeshare Deal Between China Southern & Malaysia Airlines…


A strengthening of air links in Asia has taken place this week with China Southern & Malaysia Airlines expanding their codeshare.

The expanded codeshare deal between China Southern & Malaysia Airlines will include the following routes:

  • Guangzhou-Penang
  • Kuala Lumpur-Beijing Daxing
  • Kuala Lumpur-Shanghai Pudong

Within this expanded deal, there will also be plans to increase flights, as discussed below:

  • China Southern Airlines will increase capacity into Malaysia to 73 flights per week.
  • Malaysia Airlines will continue to operate 54 weekly flights to China which includes:
    • Guangzhou
    • Shanghai Pudong
    • Beijing Daxing
    • Xiamen

What we see here is a comprehensive set of flights that will be on offer thanks to this expansion in the codeshare deal.

Both Sides Want To Grow Belt & Road Initiative…

Mr. Zhang Dongsheng, Deputy Director General of the Commercial Steering Committee and Senior Vice President of the Marketing Division of China Southern Airlines said the following on the deal:

“Under the framework of the “Belt and Road” initiative, China Southern Airlines will continue to leverage its network advantages to explore new opportunities with Malaysia Airlines, and deepen our cooperation in more fields, aiming to bring greater air travel experience for all passengers.”

Adding to this was Mr. Ahmad Luqman Mohd Azmi, Chief Executive Officer of Airlines from Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG):

“By expanding our codeshare agreement, travellers can now enjoy an enhanced travel experience, seamlessly connecting to more destinations with greater convenience and flexibility.”

“As the gateway to Asia and beyond, Malaysia Airlines provides a world of exploration and adventure  for travellers on board Malaysian Hospitality.”

“This is especially beneficial with the current visa-free policy for Malaysian & Chinese travellers to travel between the two countries, making it easier than ever to discover and appreciate the rich cultures and attractions they have to offer.”

In conclusion, this represents a strong expansion in the relationship between Malaysia Airlines & China Southern.

Looking ahead, all eyes will be on how the expansion is welcomed by customers.

It remains clear that there is strong demand for flights between the Chinese mainland and Kuala Lumpur.

But for now, let’s see how this expansion performs, and whether there is scope to expand it further going into the future.
